“…Labour and economic historians have studied workingclass life and culture since the beginning of Chile's industrialisation because of the precarious working conditions and labour organisations emerging from it. More recently, researchers have also included emerging subjects related to the transformation of the working environment as a result of the latest changes in the Chilean society, such as the new forms of work organisation and labour flexibility (Yañez, Medel and Diaz 2001;Montero 2003;Sehnbruch 2006;Durán-Palma and Lopez 2009;Leiva Gomez 2009;Stecher, Godoy and Toro 2010); the problems caused by long and irregular working hours (Espinoza 2001;Espinoza and Morris 2002;Cadmatori, Caceres and Vasquez 2009), and the state of health, safety and quality of life of individuals at work (Espinoza 2001;Espinoza and Morris 2002;Claro and Bedregal 2003;Sehnbruch 2006;Cornejo 2009;Saavedra and Von Mühlenbrock 2009;Carvajal 2011). In this literature, the main finding is that most of the workers in Chile do have precarious jobs, which means that they have an unstable and sometimes informal labour relationship, generally subjected to extreme and changing shifts, extensive working hours and insecure working environment.…”
