Concurrent Training with Different Aerobic Exercises

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of using different intensities and types of aerobic exercise (i. e., cycle ergometer or running) during concurrent training on neuromuscular adaptations. A total of 44 young women were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups: concurrent strength and continuous running training (SCR, n=10), concurrent strength and interval running training (SIR, n=11), concurrent strength and continuous cycle ergometer training (SCE, n=11), or strength training only (STO, n=12)… Show more

“…This phenomenon may occur due to the negative influence of endurance training performance on strength training-induced neuromuscular adaptations (Dolezal and Potteiger 1998;Kraemer et al 1995). Although several studies have focused on concurrent training in young populations García-Pallares and Izquierdo 2011;Izquierdo-Gabarren et al 2010;Cadore et al 2012c;Silva et al 2012), a limited number of studies have explored the effects of concurrent training on strength and endurance performance in older individuals (Izquierdo et al 2004;Cadore et al 2010Cadore et al , 2012aHolviala et al 2010;Sillampää et al 2008;Karavirta et al 2011). Certain studies have recently examined the influence of volume and intensity manipulation and the effects of the intra-session exercise sequence on concurrent training adaptations (Izquierdo et al 2004(Izquierdo et al , 2005Cadore et al 2010Cadore et al , 2011aCadore et al , 2012a.…”

In studies that used interval training, five used the combination of the HIIT protocol with strength training 21,[23][24][25]28 , while four adopted the SIT principles for combined training 20,22,26,27 . Regarding the methodological quality of studies, one was classified as with low methodological quality 20 , six with medium quality 21,23,24,[26][27][28] and two with high quality 22,25 .…”
