Concordance of histopathologic and cytologic grading in musculoskeletal sarcomas

Abstract: Welcher Weg ist der richtige?

“…The significance of pleomorphism in the grading of spindle-cell lesions is expected. Jones et al 18 and Weir et al 29 also found a statistical association of atypia or pleomorphism with grade in their study of soft-tissue sarcomas. They found that cellular atypia best reflected high-grade mesenchymal lesions.…”

“…The patients might also receive neoadjuvant chemotherapy in some protocols. A similar treatment protocol is adopted at the University of Utah Medical Center in cases of adult soft-part sarcomas, as described by Jones et al 18 Therefore, the objective of the cytologic distinction of benign, low-grade, and high-grade spindle-cell lesions is to provide the clinician with useful information upon which the best therapeutic approach can be chosen. Indeed, Kilpatrick et al 27 reported that FNAB material was enough to initiate definitive therapy in 83% of soft tissue sarcomas.…”

“…In only 7% of cases were the FNA findings misleading (benign or inflammatory) and in 5% of cases the reading was interpreted as inadequate. More recently, Jones et al [19] identified that FNA biopsies of sarcoma were more often interpreted as showing a lower grade than that determined by final analysis of the fully resected specimen.…”
