Conceptual Framework for Integrating Bim and Augmented Reality in Construction Management

Abstract: The need for systematic data collection and processing to generate real-time building site progress information is critical. Building Information Modelling (BIM) provides the benefit of aggregating information about the building site on a single platform. Augmented reality (AR) emerges to enhance BIM concerning visualization of the building site, through processing and automatic absorption of information. This work aims to analyse the potential of AR association to BIM, by adopting an approach base… Show more

“…To develop a generic framework of a DT BIM is a comprehensive digital representation of a building comprising the 3D geometry of all its components and a semantic description of the component types and their relationships (Kim et al, 2020b). BIM is critically essential for progress monitoring in three different aspects: producing as-planned data, providing as-built data and comparing these two together (Machado and Vilela, 2020). As-planned data are construction progress-monitoring baseline.…”

“…Furthermore, multiple studies regarding the integration of BIM and RFID for various purposes were conducted [97][98][99][100]. In the construction phase, conceptual frameworks have been researched for the integration of BIM and AR [101,102]. It was investigated how BIM can be extended to the site via AR to improve the way information is accessed [103].…”

“…Nonetheless, given the significance, ARenhanced BIM is classified as a separate category in this article. Combined with AR technologies' visualization potential, BIM can perform as a functional decision support system (Chen et al, 2015;Machado and Vilela, 2020). A holistic bibliometric literature review of BIM between 2005 and 2015 can be found in Santos et al (2017) and Abdirad (2017), concluding that AR-enhanced BIM is one of the main trends of practical BIM application.…”
