Computed tomography of orbital lesions

Abstract: Computed tomography (CT) has given us a new method for examining the orbit and its contents. The technique of examination is described, and the indications for the application of computed tomography in ophthalmology are considered: suspected orbital tumors, unilateral exophthalmos, pareses of the ocular muscles, traumatic lesions and malformations in the region of the orbit. The findings in 210 cases of orbital lesions examined in this study are reported and the differential diagnosis is discussed. Considerabl… Show more

“…These findings are critical clues for diagnosis and treatment plan. 5,7,10,14,16 Therefore, physician should not hesitate to perform CT and MRI to evaluate these lesions. Our current study has certain limitations and there also some aspects in this approach that require attention.…”

“…Moreover, CT can be used to evaluate bone lesions and associated destructions. 1,2,10,16 Although MRI requires sedation and the need to care for metal artifacts, it provides high-resolution soft tissue images and anatomical information, including those of the optic nerve and epidural space. 1,2,10 In addition to these modalities, ultrasound has been reported to be useful for evaluating extraocular intra-orbital lesions.…”

“…Since 1972 Computerized Tomography has been increasingly used, and the method has shown its great superiority in the detection of retro-orbital lesions (Wende et al 1977). Ginaldi et al (1981) showed increased pre-contrast attenuation among 72% verified cerebral metastases from malignant skin melanomas with further enhancement after contrast infusion.…”
