Computerized Tomography of Malignant Melanomas of the Choroid

Abstract: Twelve histologically verified choroidal melanomas, 15 normal fellow eyes and 4 simulating lesions (vitreous haemorrhage, choroidal haemorrhage, retinal detachment and choroidal detachment) were CT-scanned before and after intravenous contrast media (maximal attenuation in the tumours were estimated from a computerized curve corresponding to a line placed from the center of the eye, through the tumour to the outside of the bulb). The melanomas showed significantly higher precontrast attenuation (54 HU) than th… Show more

“…It is difficult to distinguish between melanoma and a retinal detachment with a CT-scan due to their almost identical CT-numbers (Alsbirk & Halaburt 1983). Clinical evaluation of an eye habouring a melanoma frequently discloses a secondary retinal detakhment.…”

“…The use of CT-scan has been helpful in solving the diagnostic problems associated with a choroidal melanoma (Guthoff et a1 1981), Alsbirk & Halaburt 1983). CT-scan is a useful method for screening all ocular tumours and especially uveal melanomas (de Keizer et a1 1986).…”
