“…More recently, nonequilibrium perspectives of grazing ecology have, by highlighting rainfall-induced spatiotemporal variability of pasture growth, shifted the focus of academic attention to the role of livestock mobility in increasing the resilience of livestock productivity to climatic fluctuations (Sandford 1982;Wilson 1989;Scoones 1994;Swallow 1994) and adjusting local stocking rates to available forage (Behnke et al 1993;Fafchamps and Gavian 1996;Niamir-Fuller 1999). The broader ecological and social contexts within which livestock husbandry of Sudano-Sahelian West Africa operates have changed significantly over the past thirty years. This study concerns how: (1) these broader trends have affected the quantity and quality of labor investments into livestock herding; and (2) the ecological and animal nutritional implications of observed variation in labor investments into herding. The study was conducted in a 500 km 2 area of western Niger using a combination of qualitative interviews of herders and herd managers, household composition surveys, herd composition monitoring, grazing management monitoring and georeferenced vegetation and livestock grazing itinerary data. Statistical analyses were performed using a two-staged approach: (1) analysis of the factors affecting the allocation of labor to herding at the level of the managing household; and (2) analysis of the effect of herd characteristics, season, microgeography and herders' social position on herders' effort and the nutritional and ecological impacts of these efforts. The results of these analyses support the conclusion that the changing regional context of livestock husbandry leads to a reduction in labor (quantity and quality) investment or an "extensification" of herding with significant implications for livestock productivity and the environment.

El debate social acerca de la cuestión del trabajo y de su valor se vuelve frecuentemente confuso debido a la polisemia de la noción tanto de trabajo como la de su valor. En lo referente a la primera, la gran variedad de los tipos de trabajo pone en relieve su indeterminación. Por su parte, la noción de valor cuando se aplica al trabajo, puede adoptar tres enfoques distintos: en cuanto modo de desarrollo personal y de socialización, el trabajo puede ser un valor fundador del ser humano (lo cual se aborda en la primera sección de este artículo); también se le puede reconocer como la fuente primaria de la producción de valores de uso (discutido en la segunda sección), y, en fin, se le puede insertar en la esfera mercantil, si bien es cierto que el trabajo no es una mercancía, la fuerza de trabajo se intercambia en las economías de mercado como si lo fuese (lo que se trata en la tercera sección).

Une enquête à l’aide d’un questionnaire à passage unique a été conduite auprès des clients de moutons sur le marché à bétail de Bouaké. L’objectif a été de déterminer le comportement du prix du mouton au cours de l’année. La collecte des données, qui a accordé une attention particulière aux périodes des grandes fêtes de l’année, a porté sur le prix et quelques caractéristiques physiques des animaux. L’enquête a concerné 552 moutons commercialisés sur le marché. Le nombre de moutons vendus durant la semaine précédant chacune des fêtes a été plus élevé que celui obtenu après chaque fête. Le marché de petits ruminants de Bouaké a surtout été approvisionné par des moutons importés (81 p. 100), en majorité de type Sahélien (60 p. 100). La manière traditionnelle de fixer le prix des moutons par une appréciation visuelle de la corpulence, sans instrument de mesure, a donné des résultats comparables à la détermination du prix à l’aide de pesées. Les vendeurs ont fait montre d’une bonne expérience dans cette activité. Le poids vif et les périodes de fêtes ont influencé significativement le prix du mouton. Les moutons de grande taille, en majorité de type Sahélien, ont surtout été vendus pendant les périodes de fêtes musulmanes. Durant les semaines précédant les fêtes, le prix du mouton le plus élevé a été enregistré pour la Tabaski (en moyenne 39 705 Fcfa/mouton Sahélien et 26 750 Fcfa/mouton Djallonké) ; le prix du mouton le plus faible a été obtenu pour la Noël pour le mouton Sahélien (28 105 Fcfa/tête) et au nouvel an pour le mouton Djallonké (17 937 Fcfa/tête). Le prix des moutons a surtout été lié au poids des animaux et aux périodes de fêtes de l’année qui ont modulé le choix du client.
