“…Prior work has focused on the resulting changes in the prevalence (Bonfiglioli 1990;de Bruijn and van Djik 1995) and orientation (Bernadet 1984;Bassett 1986;Blench 1994;Turner 1999c) of the classic south-north transhumance cycle. Despite the growing year-round reliance of the regional herd on local pastures, very little has been written on how general trends in the region have affected local grazing management (but see Faugère et al 1990a;Dugué 1998;Manlay 2000;Schlecht et al 2004). This study, by analyzing the physical and social factors affecting local grazing management, illuminates the implications of five major regional trends on local grazing management.…”

“…More recently, nonequilibrium perspectives of grazing ecology have, by highlighting rainfall-induced spatiotemporal variability of pasture growth, shifted the focus of academic attention to the role of livestock mobility in increasing the resilience of livestock productivity to climatic fluctuations (Sandford 1982;Wilson 1989;Scoones 1994;Swallow 1994) and adjusting local stocking rates to available forage (Behnke et al 1993;Fafchamps and Gavian 1996;Niamir-Fuller 1999). While this perspective represents an improvement over the inappropriate models of grazing management imposed upon the region in the past, there has been a tendency to: (1) emphasize the seasonal travel movements of herds between encampments over the grazing movements around encampments (Schlecht et al 2001); and (2) to ignore the human role of providing fodder to herds in open range situations (Faugère et al 1990b;Moulin 1993;Turner 1999a;Schlecht et al 2004). This has reduced the relevance of the "nonequilibrium range management" literature to regions such as Sudano-Sahelian West Africa, where significant changes in livestock husbandry generally run counter to those envisioned and prescribed by the new models Bassett and Turner 2007).…”
