Compressed fluids extraction methods, yields, antioxidant activities, total phenolics and flavonoids content for Brazilian Mantiqueira hops

Abstract: This study compares the yields of different extractions methods for a Brazilian variety of Humulus lupulus using scCO2, scCO2+ethanol, scCO2+ethyl acetate, and compressed propane. Extracts were characterized by total phenolics content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity (AA). The extraction yields were from 2.7 to 10.1 wt% when using compressed propane at 20 °C and 10 MPa and scCO2+ethyl acetate at 80 °C and 25 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, the effect of adding ethyl acetate as a c… Show more

“…Studies have described the extraction of bio-compounds from BSG by conventional solid-liquid extraction processes, such as maceration, infusion, and Soxhlet extraction [9][10][11]. However, alternative extraction methodologies based on compressed fluids have been proposed to efficiently obtain and recovery of different compounds, such as extraction of spent coffee grounds oil using high-pressure CO2 [12], high-pressure extraction of caffeine [13], pressurized hot water extraction of pectin [14], pressurized liquid extraction combined with dispersive liquid-liquid micro extraction of endocrine disrupting compounds from cheese [15], compressed extraction of total phenolics and flavonoids content in hops [16].…”

“…The group consisting of flavonoids also has important pharmacological activities against free radicals, with important anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, anti-carcinogenic, antimicrobial, hepatoprotective, antiviral and platelet protection action (Amri, Hossain, 2018;Veiga et al, 2021). Phenolic compounds also have activities against pathogens, prevent cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases and diabetes, are also important anticancer agents, anti-inflammatory, immune system stimulators and hormonal modulators (Ajuru, Williams, Ajuru, 2017).…”

“…The total phenolic content (TPC) of extracts was determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu colorimetric method, and gallic acid was used as a standard (Veiga et al., 2021). The corn silk extract, 0.25 ml, was mixed with 0.25 ml of the Folin–Ciocalteu reagent and 1 ml of 7.5% (w/v) Na 2 CO 3 solution for 1 hr at room temperature.…”
