Competitiveness of meat agri‐food chain in Brazil

Abstract: Studies on competitiveness in agri‐food systems have been challenged by non‐standard approaches. Traditional studies are defined as the ones based on comparative costs and market participation of countries or industries. Since comparative costs and market shares are distorted by subsidies, especially for agricultural products, traditional approaches show inconsistent results. Discusses competitiveness in a dynamic way, based on comparative capacity of agribusiness chain co‐ordination. In order to study the com… Show more

“…While some farmers adopt capital-intensive production systems and have high yields per area and/or per animal, others adopt extensive systems with low technical efficiency (Zylbersztajn & Machado Filho, 2003;Souza Filho et al, 2010). Such heterogeneity in beef cattle production in Brazil has been justified, historically, by the abundance of land and by the absence of economic and institutional pressures to increase yields.…”

“…Some of these studies use value chain analysis as a tool to implement lean (Taylor 2005;Francis, Simons, and Bourlakis 2008), and the others focus on how to handle demand management (Taylor 2006a;Taylor and Fearne 2009 Vertical collaboration/integration has also been an area of major interest within the studies of relationship management from a network perspective, with six papers focused on this integration (Wilson 1996;Folkerts and Koehorst 1997;Loader 1997;Rademakers and McKnight 1998;Fearne 1998;Kerr 1999;Zylbersztajn and Machado Filho 2003). Many of these papers stress the importance of extended vertical collaboration in the food supply chain both due to the product characteristics and due to the changed actor structure in terms of a stronger retail sector (Wilson 1996;Folkerts and Koehorst 1997;Rademakers and McKnight 1998;Van der Vorst and Beulens 1999;Kerr 1999;Zylbersztajn and Machado Filho 2003).…”

“…Discussions of lean and agile SC strategies are common in studies of British red meat and UK beef chains [96]. It is commonly recognized that the competitiveness of SC strategies may be promoted by a more efficient procurement system, better coordination [97], and postponement management [98,99].…”
