Competition of NO and SO2for OH Generated within Electrical Aerosol Analyzers

Abstract: The Electrical Aerosol Analyzer ( E M ) provides data for the calculation of number, surface area, and volume distribution of submicron range aerosol particles in ambient air and flue gases. Current theory reveals the generation of artifact aerosol particles identified as sulfuric acid within the instrument. The sulfuric acid aerosol, generated by the reaction of SO, and OH, has been shown to interfere with the signal output of the EAA; and thus, affecting the instrument's desired function. In an attempt to im… Show more

“…NH 4 NO 3 solid particles were produced in humid air containing NO x and NH 3 at concentrations of a few hundred ppm. Yohannes et al (1995) have reported effects of NO on particle formation in air containing SO 2 in the corona discharger. Their results obtained at high concentrations of NO and SO 2 showed that the concentration of particles generated from SO 2 decreased with the addition of NO.…”

“…This influence increased with increasing SO 2 and H 2 O concentrations [19,22], as well as the addition of NO 2 [22]. On the other hand, Yohaness et al [23] showed that the particle concentration, generated by corona discharge, decreased when NO 2 was added to SO 2 /H 2 O/air mixed gas. Thus, the SO 2 and NOx concentrations were measured in this study.…”
