We investigated the effects of incorporation of surface pre-reacted glass ionomer (S-PRG) filler in tissue conditioner (TC) on Candida albicans adhesion. We prepared specimens containing 0, 5, 10, or 20 wt% of S-PRG filler, and measured the amount of C. albicans on the surface using a colony forming unit (CFU) assay and scanning electron microscopic images. In addition, we measured the consistency, penetration depth, and surface roughness (Ra). CFU values for 10 and 20 wt% were significantly lower than that for the control (p<0.05). Hyphal density on the surface was greater in the control. The 10 and 20 wt% specimens showed significantly higher consistency and Ra, lower penetration depth ratio than control (p<0.05). These results suggest that incorporation of S-PRG filler may reduce C. albicans adhesion onto TC surface; however, the optimal amount of filler is dictated by the influence of filler incorporation on mechanical and surface characters of TC.

This study examined the antimicrobial/antifungal ability of a tissue conditioner containing a photocatalyst for Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The photocatalyst was mixed with tissue conditioners powders at concentrations of 0, 10, 15, and 20 wt%. Tissue conditioners powders containing a photocatalyst were mixed with liquid to make test specimens. Test specimens inoculated by each microorganism were irradiated by ultraviolet light for 0-, 2-and 4 hours. The antimicrobial/antifungal effects were evaluated by the CFU technique. The CFU values of each microorganism for tissue conditioners containing a photocatalyst showed significant decrease following UV-irradiation. The improvement in antimicrobial/antifungal effects was concomitant with the increase of the mixing ratio and the irradiation time. Therefore, the results indicated that tissue conditioners containing a photocatalyst might have photocatalytic ability.

Chemical cleansing by denture cleansers is the first choice for denture plaque control of tissue conditioners. This study evaluated the influences of denture cleansers on the surface quality of tissue conditioners by determining surface roughness and porosity. Three tissue conditioners (Hydro-Cast, SR-Ivoseal, Visco-Gel) and 3 types of denture cleansers (Pika [enzyme type], Polident [neutral peroxide type with enzymes], Steradent [alkaline peroxide type]) were evaluated. Five specimens of each tissue conditioner/solution combination for each time period of immersion were prepared. The surface roughness of dental stone casts made from the tissue conditioners was evaluated using a profilometer. The surface quality of Hydro-Cast and Visco-Gel tended to be most deteriorated by the alkaline peroxide cleanser. The enzyme type of denture cleansers is most suitable for tissue conditioners in terms of surface quality. The suitable period for application of the enzyme cleansers would range from 3 to 7 days.
