Compatibility of tissue conditioners and dental stones: Effect on surface roughness

Abstract: The type of tissue conditioner, and especially immersion time, had a significant effect on the surface quality of dental stone casts. The type of dental stone used is less important.

“…Low flowability and a small change in hardness over time are desirable to maintain adaptation with the oral mucosa and occlusal vertical dimension for temporary relining 5) . In addition, the surface roughness of TC used for functional impression affects the surface properties of the dental stone model 33) . Therefore, the increase in surface roughness of the TC by incorporation of S-PRG filler possibly deteriorates the surface character of the working cast.…”

“…Medium (2,700 µL) was added to the test wells following irradiation and mixed with the irradiated suspension. The mixture was diluted in a 10-fold series to 10 5 . A diluted suspension of bacteria and yeast strains was placed onto each agar plate and incubated aerobically at 37°C for 24 hours.…”

“…Microorganisms on denture materials may cause additional diseases in elderly persons, such as a denture stomatitis and pneumonia 3,4) . These problems are believed to originate from the change of the surface roughness after application and the difficulty in mechanical and chemical cleaning 5) . Many studies have been performed to prevent the colonization by microorganisms.…”

“…In addition, the influence of such cleansers on the surface conditions of tissue conditioners has been evaluated by examining surface porosity 16,18) . Surface quality, which is assessed by both surface roughness values and surface porosity, is one of the most important factors in regard to the efficacy of the components of functional impression materials 24,25) . However, little information is available for the surface roughness values of dental stones casts made from tissue conditioners immersed in denture cleansers.…”
