Antimicrobial and antifungal effects of tissue conditioners containing a photocatalyst

Abstract: This study examined the antimicrobial/antifungal ability of a tissue conditioner containing a photocatalyst for Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The photocatalyst was mixed with tissue conditioners powders at concentrations of 0, 10, 15, and 20 wt%. Tissue conditioners powders containing a photocatalyst were mixed with liquid to make test specimens. Test specimens inoculated by each microorganism were irradiated by ultraviolet light for 0-, 2-and 4 hours. The … Show more

“…Upon UVA irradiation, methylene blue, an organic compound, is effectively removed from a TiHA-containing denture [27]. Several planktonic bacteria from TiHA-containing tissue-conditioning materials are also killed upon UVA irradiation [28]. However, denture plaque mostly consists of bacterial biofilms composed of multilayers of a wide variety of oral bacteria, not of planktonic bacteria.…”

“…In microbiological assays, nystatin restricted the emergence of C. albicans when it was used with a tissue conditioner. 24,30 Some researchers added nystatin to the material as a fungicidal factor. Douglas and Walker 21 showed that the tissue conditioners repressed colonization when used with nystatin and validated their findings in an in vivo study.…”

“…8 Martínez-Beneyto et al 35 showed that the most 9 recommended fungicidal agent was miconazole (prescribed by 59.3% of the survey's respondents), followed by nystatin (57.7%) for topical use. Uchimaru et al 24 reported that TiO 2 , which is a stable photocatalyst, combined with a tissue conditioner exhibited antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, S. mutans, and S. aureus, and antifungal activity against C. albicans. TiO 2 exhibits strong oxidizing power under UV radiation (from sunlight or an illuminated light source) 36 but no photocatalystic effects at nonradiation, 37,38 which means soft liners with TiO 2 may have no antifungal effect in the oral cavity environment.…”

“…Metals, such as copper and silver, have been suggested, but it has been indicated that some metals can have harmful effects (e.g., metal allergy). [4][5][6][7] Other studies have looked at developing nonmetal antimicrobial tissue conditioners, which use the antimicrobial protein human lactoferrin (hLF) commonly found in saliva, 8 photocatalysts, 9,10 or antimicrobial agents, [11][12][13] and even Melaleuca alternifolia. 14 Juncus effuses has antimicrobial activity against many microorganisms.…”
