Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been found to be associated with poor quality of life (QOL). The aim of this study was to measure QOL in T2DM patients and examine if the patients’ socio demographic, diabetes-related clinical characteristics and insulin usage are associated with better quality of life. Materials and Methods: This clinic based cross-sectional study analyzed data from outpatients with T2DM attending a referral clinic between January and June 2016. Association between Diabetes Attitudes, Wishes and Needs (DAWN) QOL and few demographic, socioeconomic, clinical and biochemical predictors were examined using multivariate logistic regression model. A total of 518 patients completed the interview. Results: The HbA1c level of insulin ± oral anti-diabetic (OAD) cohort was significantly lower (7.89 ± 1.98) than the OAD cohort (8.79 ± 1.96), P < 0.001. Compared to their counterparts in the OAD cohort, patients on insulin were older with longer duration of diabetes mellitus. Co-morbid confounders like obesity, hypoglycemia, and blood pressure control or socio demographic confounders like income, education were almost similar in both the cohorts. The incidence of hypertension, coronary artery disease (CAD) and statin usage was significantly higher in the insulin cohort. The overall composite DAWN QOL scores of the insulin ± OAD cohort (25.42 ± 4.35) was marginally higher than that of the OAD cohort (23.62 ± 5.06) ( P = 0.067). Analog insulin users were also found to have significantly higher composite DAWN QOL scores compared to human insulin users (25.77 ± 5.73 vs.24.13 ± 4.88, P = 0.037). Conclusions: The insulin cohort, despite being older and having longer duration of diabetes, had significantly higher diet compliance score, and enhanced QOL owing to better diabetes-related knowledge and treatment adherence characteristics than non-insulin users. Questionnaires-based evaluation of QOL can provide better understanding of the patient's experience of the illness, self-care, psychological and emotional functioning, and choice of therapeutic modality enhancing the quality of care.

Long-term therapy is needed for all chronic diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus (DM) so that it can affect the quality of life. Various characteristic factors can affect the quality of life such as socio-demographic and clinical. This study aims to obtain an overview of patient characteristics and analyze characteristic factors that can affect the quality of life of Prolanis type 2 DM patients at several Bandung City Public Health Care from February to May 2019. A total of 116 patients met the inclusion criteria as the study sample. The instrument used is a Diabetes Quality of Life Clinical Trial Questionnaire (DQLCTQ) in Indonesian with a cross-sectional method. The results of the description of patient characteristics are more women, age 63 years, not working, education high school, marital status, not smoking, moderate-severe physical activity, comorbidities, duration of DM < 6 years, and fasting blood glucose levels >126 mg/dL. The results of the analysis using the Mann-Whitney test showed that the difference in the quality of life with characteristic factors is not significantly different (p>0.05) and the results of the analysis with linear regression showed that there were no factors that affected the quality of life.

The herbal ingredients consisting of temulawak (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.), turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), and meniran (Phyllanthus niruri L.) have been used to improve physical fitness. However, the effect of these herbs on the quality of life is not yet known. This study aims to assess the effect of physical fitness herbal formula on quality of life. This study used a randomized controlled trial design. A total of 100 subjects were given herbal formula and 101 subjects were given a placebo. Herbal formula was made by boiling 4 cups (800 ml) of water until it boils, adding simplicia then reducing the heat, waiting for about 15-30 minutes until only two cups (400 ml) of water remained, filtered and put in a special thermos. The herbs and placebo were taken twice a day for 42 days. Before the study and on day 42th, subjects were examined for their quality of life using the Short Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire. The results showed that there were no significant changes in the mental component summary and the dimensions of physical function, role of emotions, energy, mental health, social function, and general health. However, in the physical component summary and the dimensions of physical role and pain there was a significant increase in the quality of life (p=0,032; p=0.005; p=0.017). In conclusion, the physical fitness herbal formula can improve the physical component summary of quality of life, especially the dimensions of physical roles and pain.
