Comparison of Thermal Models for Ground-Mounted South-Facing Photovoltaic Technologies: A Practical Case Study

Abstract: This paper examines the thermal properties of free-standing, ground-installed, south-facing crystalline and amorphous silicon photovoltaic modules, the remaining energy and the energy generation of the modules, in ideal and actual summer weather conditions. This work studies the algorithms in other studies used to describe the thermal processes occurring on the surface of photovoltaic modules. Using accurate devices and real, measured data, the deviations and the inaccuracies of theoretical approaches are inve… Show more

“…In general, commercial PV modules are housed on metal, and are then covered with anti-reflective coating to minimize the reflection as well as a special laminate for mechanical protection. For the PV system representation, two types of the PV model are considered either the electrical circuit model, which includes the PV electricity model and the PV thermal model [34,35], or the interpolation model. Figure 2 presents a description of the PV model type in PV emulator applications.…”

“…In [4] a thermal model of electricity production by renewable resources is developed. In [5] an optimization model is used to calculate the cost-effectiveness of PT plants' solar heating systems through different constructive hypotheses and operations.…”

“…The solar cell's voltage, which is a result of its built-in electric fields, together with the current, provides the power that can be produced by the solar cell. PV modules produce an amount of electricity that depends on the prevailing natural factors, the type and the composition of the module, and the combined effect of the installation [2]. One big limitation for solar (and wind) power is that it only generates electricity when the sun is shining (or the wind is blowing)-falling short at peak demand times like the evenings.…”

“…In addition, temperature fluctuation is an important factor in PV modules due to changes in solar irradiance and temperature. For example, crystalline PV modules have a 0.5% reduction in efficiency when the temperature is increased by 1 • C [2]. Solar radiation is the main component of the heat balance of PV modules.…”
