Comparison of the Growth of SixEucalyptusSpecies in Angola

Abstract: Eucalyptus species have been planted in Angola since the early twentieth century. −1 , resp.). Using X-ray analyses of increment cores, it was possible to study the temporal development of the stand characteristics. An analysis of the mean annual increment showed that the optimal rotation length for most of the studied eucalypts is around 22 years with the exception of E. resinifera, for which 12-15 years is the best. E. saligna had the highest maximum mean annual increment (MMAI) of 37 m 3 ha −1 attained at 2… Show more

“…Consistent with the situation in many other countries (Rejm anek & Richardson, 2011), we noted no invasions of Eucalyptus species. More than 40 species of this genus have been introduced to Angola, several of which were grown in plantations (Gossweiler, 1949;Poynton, 1979), including very large plantings along the Benguela railway line (Delgado-Matas & Pukkala, 2011). At one site, we recorded about twenty seedlings of E. camaldulensis, all less than 30 m from planted trees.…”

“…In addition, [26] reported that 15 year old E. resinifera had similar basal area to Lushoto site but higher than results from Kwamarukanga, Kibaha and Tabora. Reference [19] Reported lower results compared to clones at Lushoto highland area but higher to the other studied sites.…”

“…Additionally more than a hundred thousand European settlers were living in the area before independence. At that time, the region was considered the granary of Angola, producing exportable amounts of corn, beans, coffee, manioc and vegetables (MIAA, 1971;Delgado-Matas and Pukkala, 2011). Eucalyptus and pine plantations were established in the region for the local cellulose industry (see e.g.…”
