Identifying geographical spatial conflicts and optimizing development patterns are important prerequisites for eliminating the conflicts of geographical spatial conflict. The paper takes the Wuhan Metropolitan Area as an example. Using grid-scale data, we construct a multi-functional suitability evaluation index system for geographical space, starting from three dimensions: ecological protection, agricultural production and urban construction. The multi-index comprehensive evaluation method is used to measure the geographical spatial suitability level and identify the characteristics of geographical spatial conflict patterns. Three-dimensional Rubik's cube model is used to divide the space conflict types and optimize the partition. We found that the areas with suitable ecological protection functions and more suitable areas are mainly distributed near the waters and the Dabie Mountains and Mufu Mountains with relatively high altitude in Wuhan Metropolitan Area. Suitable areas for agricultural production functions are concentrated in the Jianghan Plain. Suitable areas for urban construction functions are concentrated around urban areas, established towns, and major transportation routes. Regions with high intensity of land and space conflicts are mainly located in the central and northwestern parts of the Wuhan Metropolitan Area. Regions with low levels of conflict are concentrated in the west, northeast, and southeast regions of the Wuhan Metropolitan Area. The degree of geographical spatial conflict in Wuhan Metropolitan Area can be divided into three primary zones and 12 secondary zones, which are intense conflict zone, general conflict zone, and weak conflict zone. Based on multi-functional perspective, identifying and analyzing the types of geographical spatial conflict will help locate the development direction of different conflict areas and provide theoretical and technical support for the optimization of geographical space.

With the acceleration of economic and social development and the increasing competition between multi-functional spaces, the coordination and stability of land space have been seriously affected. In order to simulate the conflict pattern of “production, living ecological” space and analyze its evolution characteristics, taking Qianjiang City as the research area and based on the current data of land use, the FLUS (Future Land Use Simulation) model and spatial conflict measurement model are used to calculate the change trend of “production, living ecological” spatial conflict in Qianjiang City in the past and in the future. The research results are of great significance for the scientific use of land space and the optimization of regional development patterns. The results show that: (1) From 2000 to 2020, the level of spatial conflict in Qianjiang City showed an upward trend, the proportion of medium and above conflict units gradually increased, and the conflict level in the study area gradually became dominated by strong conflict. (2) Due to the process of urbanization and the continuous growth of population and GDP (Gross Domestic Product), the construction land in Qianjiang City shows a rapid increase trend under three scenarios, and the cultivated land area shows a downward trend. (3) In 2035, under the three scenarios, the spatial conflict in Qianjiang City will be strengthened, mainly at the level of medium and above. (4) According to the change degree of conflict transformation, 15 change types are divided into five functional zones: ecological protection zone, ecological conservation zone, modern agriculture zone, urban–rural development coordination zone and urban optimization zone.

Power and conviction dynamics on land and linked natural resources: explorative insights from the greater south region of Cameroon

Communities in several parts of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) depend on natural resources for their sustenance. While growing pressure on such resources has been accused of framing conflicts, the power and convictions dimension of such conflicts remains relatively less explored. Taking the case of Cameroon, this paper undertakes an explorative analysis of power and convictions around land and linked natural resources. Specifically, the paper maps harmful convictions and their role in steering unequal access to land and linked natural resources; explores power manifestations among different categories of resource use actors; and discusses the role of different typologies of actors in shaping harmful convictions linked to land and other natural resources. Qualitative data derived from four communities in the greater south region informed this study: focus group discussions (14), key informants, and expert interviews (25) were employed. Using the actor-centred power analytical lens, the analysis entailed the use of directed content analysis, thematic analysis and narratives. The results indicate the following: Firstly, while ethnic/region-based and elitism-based harmful convictions significantly drive land resource access, gender-based and religious-based convictions are less recurrent. Secondly, while elitism-based actors exercise power through coercion, religious and political actors employ (dis)incentives and dominant information, respectively, in their quest for forestland. Thirdly, elitism-based and ethnic/region-based actors are at the centre of harmful convictions around land and linked natural resources. The results inform the actor-centred power concept, with emphasis on convictions around land and linked natural resources. Future studies should explore the conflict implications of these harmful convictions.
