Comparison of the Effectiveness of Different Techniques for Supportive Removal of Root Canal Filling Material

Abstract: Objective:To compare the cleanliness of oval cross-sectioned root canals after using different supportive techniques for removal of root canal filling material as part of retreatment process. Methods: One hundred mandibular canine teeth with flat oval cross-sectioned canals were instrumented up to #40.06 and obturated using the warm vertical compaction technique. Removal of the gutta-percha and sealer was performed using the D-RaCe nickel-titanium retreatment instruments. The roots were randomly divided into f… Show more

“…Thus, activation might occur at lower frequencies; for example, the EQ-S irrigator operating at 217 Hz. In the literature, sonic activation was proved to be helpful in retreatment [ 8 , 16 , 22 ]. Özyürek and Demiryüek found the EndoActivator less effective than the XP-endo Finisher, whereas Grischke et al and Martins et al stipulated in their studies that there was no difference between the EndoActivator and PUI [ 12 , 22 , 36 ].…”

“…The access cavities were sealed with a temporary restoration material (Cavit, 3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany). Teeth were then incubated at 37 °C for 14 days with full saturated humidity to allow the final setting [ 22 ].…”

“…Previous studies that compared EA and classic needle irrigation techniques for removal of the antibiotic paste and root canal sealer found EA more effective (31)(32)(33). EA has a noncutting tip, and the tip generates short vertical strokes by vibration and up-and down movements, which ease the elimination of debris from the root canals (18).…”

“…Study methods to determination of operative procedure errors, such as presence of residual i n dent i n i nclude p er i apic a l rad io g raphy, stereomicroscope, scanning electron microscopy, computerized microtomography as well as cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) [5,9,11,16,23]. Thus, studies on the dentin microstructure requires techniques that allow to observe details of its morphology.…”

“…The root canal filling was performed after RCP in all specimens by the hybrid technique of Tagger (11) with #40 gutta-percha main point and AH Plus ® (Dentsply Sirona, York, USA) sealer, according to the manufacturer's instructions. The specimens were then sealed with temporary material (Coltosol Vigodent, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and kept at 37 o C, in a humidifier for a period of 14 days.…”
