Comparison of natural and artificial odor lures for nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in South Texas: Developing treatment for cattle fever tick eradication

Abstract: Cattle fever ticks (CFT), vectors of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis, were eradicated from the United States by 1943, but are frequently reintroduced from neighboring border states of Mexico via stray cattle and wildlife hosts including white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) (WTD) and nilgai antelope (Boselaphus tragocamelus). Nilgai antelope are exotic bovids from India that are hosts of CFT, have large home ranges as compared to WTD, thus have the potential to spread CFT through the landscape. Current… Show more

“…As a member of the family Bovidae, nilgai are closely related to cattle (Goolsby et al, 2017; Singh et al, 2017). Native to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal, nilgai were first introduced as a game species to South Texas in 1924 (Sheffield et al, 1971).…”

“…It is thought that the presence of nilgai greatly hindered the control of this outbreak (Olafson et al, 2018). White‐tailed deer can be treated for CFT by medicated feed laced with acaricide (i.e., ivermectin; Goolsby et al, 2017; Pelzel, 2005; Pound et al, 2010). Treated feed is available between February and July, allowing deer at least 60 days off treatment before hunting season begins (USDA‐APHIS, 2017).…”

“…Cattle fever ticks, vectors of the causative agents of bovine babesiosis, are endemic throughout many regions of Mexico [36,37]. This not only affects Mexico's cattle herds but threatens the re-introduction and re-establishment of cattle fever ticks into the southern U.S. through cattle trade and the movement of wildlife alternate hosts across the Mexico-U.S. border [38][39][40]. This system exemplifies the challenges of implementing effective management and control strategies in disease systems that share common geography across international borders [33,41].…”

“…White-tailed deer ( Odocoileus virginianus ) maintain CFT populations in the absence of cattle, which compromises eradication efforts [ 7 , 8 ]. Nilgai ( Boselaphus tragocamelus ) is also an alternate host of CFT in the south Texas-Mexico transboundary region [ 9 , 10 ]. Nilgai is an antelope species in the same Bovidae family as cattle, which was introduced to south Texas from India in 1941 [ 11 ].…”
