Comparing clinical effects of marbofloxacin and gamithromycin in goat kids with pneumonia

Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of a single-dose of gamithromycin (GM) or marbofloxacin (MR) in kids with naturally occurring pneumonia. Thirty-six kids, aged 2–2.5 months, with body weight ranging from 12 kg to 18 kg were presented with clinical signs of pneumonia. The most prominent clinical findings were an increase in the respiratory rate, crackling lung sounds on auscultation, coughing, nasal discharge and an increased rectal temperature. Mannheimia haemolytica and Mycoplasma sp… Show more

“…Marbofloxacin is recommended to the use at 2 mg/kg dose by EMA (1999) in livestock animals. However, the results of simulation and therapeutic studies proposed use at 10 mg/kg dose to achieve an adequate antimicrobial efficacy (Kacar, Batmaz, Yilmaz, & Mecitoglu, 2018; Lorenzutti et al, 2018; Paulin, Schneider, Dron, & Woehrle, 2018; Valle, Schneider, Galland, Giboin, & Woehrle, 2012). In this study, sheep received marbofloxacin at 10 mg/kg dose.…”

“…Rectal temperatures and blood samples were collected daily from each goat during the study period to detect P. multocida . After the challenge assay, cumulative clinical scores (CCS) of all animals were obtained by using a score system introduced by Kacar et al, including respiratory rate, lung auscultation findings, laryngotracheal palpation results, and rectal temperatures ( Supplementary Table 1 ) ( 16 ). One of the challenged goats died from acute disease within 8 h postinoculation, and other goats were euthanized 3 days post- P. multocida challenge.…”

“…However, we did not observe clinical symptoms or evidence of lung damage or inflammation in any of the infected lambs. Interestingly, treatment with the macrolide antibiotic gamithromycin, which has been used successfully to treat clinical Mycoplasma -associated pneumonia in cattle, goats and pigs [2224], failed to reduce M. ovipneumoniae colonization in the infected lambs. Overall, these data suggest that, in the absence of other opportunistic pathogens, M. ovipneumoniae behaves like an upper respiratory tract commensal that is not affected by the host antibody response or a macrolide antibiotic gamithromycin, which is commonly used to treat respiratory disease in ruminants.…”
