Comparative Study of the IEEE 802.16 Random Access Mechanisms

Abstract: The WiMAX technology based on the IEEE802.16 standard is currently the most prospective candidate for broadband wireless access networks. One of the key issues is the design of the MAC layer, in particular the multiple access scheme. The IEEE 802.16 standard specifies different scheduling services with individual mechanisms for accessing the channel on the uplink. The non-real-time polling service and the best-effort service mainly rely on a contention mechanism to submit bandwidth requests to the base station… Show more

“…However, one problem of the advanced scheduling services (UGS and rtPS) is that a good knowledge of the traffic characteristics (e.g., packet arrival interval and packet size) is required to provide satisfactory QoS and efficiently utilize bandwidth [6]. Since the traffic characteristics of many applications are not known in advance, the traffic will be transported via nrtPS or BE scheduling services.…”

“…Most of recent studies [2]- [6] of random access in IEEE 802.16 are focusing on the collision probability and reducing the collision probability using either CDMA-based random access or message-based random access. In [2], the random access schemes and those characteristics have been studied focusing on collision probabilities and access delays.…”

“…However, the authors assumed that the procedure is initiated via a sending a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) code, which is not available for all physical layers specified by the standard. The use of CDMA for contention-based bandwidth request is also investigated in [13], where the authors show via simulation that this technique yields better performance than the mandatory mechanism, at least under the considered scenarios. However, since the use of CDMA codes is optional and is only available with mobile terminals, we do not consider it here.…”
