Comparative studies on the implantation of nano platinum black and pure platinum electrodes in the rabbit orbicularis oculi muscle

Abstract: Objective: To study the interactive influence of implanted nano platinum black electrodes (as compared with pure platinum electrodes) on rabbit orbicularis oculi muscle morphology and function. Methods: The influence of the two types of electrode on the orbicularis oculi muscle was monitored in a rabbit model of facial paralysis. Biological electric current and exciting current were administered to biological tissue, and morphological and functional changes were identified. Changes in orbicularis oculi muscle c… Show more

“…However, to follow the DC strategy faithfully, EMG signals should also be obtained from the antagonist levator palpebrae muscle. To our knowledge, previous reports on electrode implantation into the eyelid are limited to the orbicularis oculi muscle in rabbits [ 16 ] and dogs [ 17 , 18 ].…”

“…The stimulating module included a three-channel stimulation electrode and one reference electrode. These electrodes were made of nano platinum black, which was demonstrated to be safe and effective in previous research ( 6 ). In the current research the processing chip was implanted into the forehead of the facial nerve paralyzed animal model.…”

“…The demonstration of MEA fabrication on hydrogel substrates is an important step toward neural implants which match the mechanical properties of the brain and other excitable tissue. Similar to silver, platinum has been briefly explored for use in neural interfaces, [88][89][90] but nano-platinum must be carefully employed due to its potential as a highly reactive catalyst of simple compounds that may be found in physiological media. [91][92] Shah et al used nano-cluster platinum films to enhance implantable electrode performance.…”
