Comparative Efficacy of Piperazine Citrate, Levamisole and Pineapple Leaves Extract Against Naturally Infected Ascariasis in Indigenous Chickens

Abstract: The experiment was carried out to determine the comparative efficacy of piperazine citrate, levamisole and pineapple leaves extract as anthelmintics against ascariasis in chicken in the Department of Pharmacology in collaboration with Department of Parasitology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh, during the period from July to October 2004. Accordingly forty chickens naturally infected with ascarid parasite were selected for this experiment. The chickens were equally divided into 4 (A,… Show more

“…The mortality index was close to that of mebendazole proving that although not statistically different, the plant has anthelmintic properties. This is in agreement with Hoque et al (2006) who reported decrease in ascariasis parasites due to oral administration of pineapple leaf extracts to indigenous chickens. This entails that medicinal plants can effectively reduce worm burden in village chickens.…”

“…During the second and third hour, motility findings show that H. gallinarum worms succumbed to the anti-parasitic effects. Inhibition of worm motility is a crucial process for mortality of worms and hence anthelmintic property of a medicinal plant or anthelmintic drug, thereby relieving the animal from parasite infections (Hoque, Mostofa, Awal, Choudhury, Hossain, & Alam, 2006). The ability of A. sisalana extract (14.5 mg/mL) to exert high worm inhibition motility at 12-h interval shows that the plant has some anthelmintic properties.…”

“…The histomonas can cause liver damage leading to protein deficiency and hence anaemia (Sentíes-Cué et al, 2009), therefore synthesis and maintenance of haematological values within the reference range, is crucial as necessitated by the studied plants. The results are, however, contrary to those of Hoque et al (2006) where haemoglobin and packed cell volume (haematocrit) increased in the study for testing the anthelmintic efficacy of pineapple leaf extract against natural ascariasis in indigenous chickens.…”

“…Blood was collected pre-feeding in triplicate per treatment on day 0, 7 and 14 using a syringe and a needle from the wing vein (Akhtar and Riffat, 1985;Hoque et al, 2006). Heparinised vacutainer tubes were used for the collection of blood for FBC while non-heparinised vacutainer tubes were used to collect blood for serum biochemical assay (AST and ALT).…”
