Comparative efficacy evaluation of seven commercial injectable ceftriaxone purchased at Ambo, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia, using agar well plate diffusion method

Abstract: Background Irrational use of this drug leads to emergence of resistant bacteria and also leads to infections that are worse than the original diagnosed ones. Important concern is the uncertainty of administered antibiotics about whether the quality of a generic medicine is equal to brand name drug; if both brand/generic are bioequivalent, then antibiotic selection should be based on the cost of therapy. Methods The efficacy of seven ceftriaxone brands available at Ambo, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia, was eva… Show more

“…These researchers compared the diameters of the zone of inhibition between different brands of antibiotics to determine efficacy. Gunasekaran et al 22 tested seven parenteral ceftriaxone brands using this technique. Diluted test antibiotic solutions were added to wells punched in the agar inoculated with the control bacterial strains and allowed to diffuse.…”

“…Many generics of ceftriaxone fail to match the branded product's quality criteria, according to past studies in Japan and England. Another trial found a decrease in efficacy and an increased probability of clinical failure [16][17][18]. Study in Ethiopia, on the other hand, found that the efficacy of generic brands of Ceftriaxone was equivalent to that seen in the parent version of the drug [19].…”
