Comparative characterisation of non-monodisperse gold nanoparticle populations by X-ray scattering and electron microscopy

Abstract: A cross-method comparison for quasi-monodisperse, polydisperse and bimodal gold nanoparticles of 2–7 nm in diameter between conventional image analysis of transmission electron micrographs and small-angle X-ray scattering with form-free Monte Carlo fitting.

“…One difference of SAXS and EM is that SAXS probes comparably large ensembles, thus providing robust statistics, but without resolving individual particles, whereas EM allows for intuitive assessments of particle uniformity and dispersity, their arrangement and defects, but in a small region and with limited statistics. [166,167] As an example, consider the particles in Figure 2a. Both, SAXS and TEM analysis could provide a measurement of mean particle size and dispersity in good agreement.…”

“…Besides, SAXS allows precise measurement of particles sizes, shapes, and size distributions providing complementary information to EM methods. For instance, using Monte Carlo methods [230,231] different populations of Au NPs have recently been measured, [166] and the size evolution of NPs can be tracked in in situ experiments. [232]…”

“…Monodisperse AuNP solution can provide clearer diagnostic results [10] and precise delivery of ionizing radiation in radiotherapy [11] compared to polydisperse AuNP solution. To exploit these advantages, this study takes the approach through centrifugation method to produce a monodisperse AuNP solution.…”

“…The SAXS data were fitted with double shell model consisting with the contribution from over‐all core‐shell structure, polymer chain and polystyrene (PS) core with Gaussian distribution. In another report, [ 22 ] non‐monodisperse population of gold nanoparticles were determined by SAXS and compared with TEM.…”
