Comparative anatomy of the proximal tibia in healthy Labrador Retrievers and Yorkshire Terriers

Abstract: The variation in tibial conformation between breeds should be taken into account when studying the role of each measured parameter in the pathology of cruciate disease. When the relevance of each of the aforementioned measured parameters is better understood, it may help determine the most appropriate surgical treatment.

“…In human medicine, using standard terminology and reference ranges of the intact skeletal structure is common, and different methods are developed, which allows physicians to differentiate normal and pathologic limb conformation [9]. As in human medicine, standard terminology and measurements have been developed in veterinary medicine [1017].…”

“…Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) is the orthopedic knee condition most common in dogs (Calvo et al 2014 ; Marino and Loughin 2010 ). The causes that lead to CCLR are still not completely defined (Vedrine et al 2013 ), but a number of presumed factors lead to a common pathway in the origin of these lesions (Cook 2010 ). Although the lesions are primarily traumatic, other degenerative factors have been noted in the pathogenesis of this condition, such as age, sex, and obesity (Venzin et al 2004 ), as well as racial predisposition, inflammatory and conformation alterations, and immune-mediated mechanisms (Griffon 2010 ).…”

“…Ze względu na nie w pełni zrozumiały wpływ kąta nachylenia plateau na uszkodzenie więzadła krzyżowe-go doczaszkowego dokonywano kolejnych pomiarów, określając nowe wartość charakteryzujące bliższą części kości piszczelowej, do których należą: długość plateau kości piszczelowej, kąt nachylenia więzadła prostego rzepki w stosunku do plateau kości piszczelowej (patella tendon angle -PTA), szerokość względna guzowatości kości piszczelowej (relative tibial tuberosity width -rTTW), kąt nachylenia osi bliższego końca kości piszczelowej (distal tibial axis/proximal tibial axis angle DPA, kąt Z (Z angle), Wykorzystywano również do pomiarów linię Blumensaata (5,7,12,23,33,43,45,50,63).…”

“…Wartości TPA Średnią wartość kąta nachylenia plateau kości piszczelowej u zdrowych psów określano u ras dużych (> 20 kg) między 16,9° a 27,97°, zaś u ras małych (< 13 kg) między 26° a 34° (49,59,63,64,67). Różnica pomiędzy wartościami TPA u osobników z przerwanym więzadłem krzyżowym doczaszkowym a zdrowymi wynosiła 5,66°.…”
