Comparative analysis of circular agriculture development in selected Western Balkan countries based on sustainable performance indicators

Abstract: Modern agriculture rapidly improves productivity, yet it also pays high price for overconsumption of natural resources and energy use which is not environmentally friendly. To shape a sustainable agricultural future, the Western Balkans countries (WBC) need to tackle key challenges such as pollution, climate change and biodiversity threats. “…Previous research related to the motor theme of CSA explored the adaptation of agricultural methods to develop adaptive agriculture for plantations, landscapes and forests while addressing climate issues and food security [ 91 , 92 ]. Regenerative and circular agriculture explores ways to avoid using chemicals and to rather utilize methods to develop natural processes to protect the soil, the environment, and people through the production of healthier foods [ 189 ]. Figure 4 highlights this through subthemes, such as food security, soil fertility and related properties/topics.…”

“…It is estimated that physical infrastructure, such as power plants, concrete roads, bridges, mines, oil refineries, mines and waste factories, create a considerable amount of environmental deterioration [ 31 ]. In the era of industrialization, the transport sector and investment in transport infrastructure are considered the main determinants of environmental deterioration [ 29 , 32 42 ].…”
