Traditional Javanese architecture, especially in rural areas, has undergone a major transformation. Transformation is owner’s response to various conditions, such as the increasing number of family members, the improvement of social status and economic conditions, the needs of modernization and the consequences of being involved in government’s programs. This paper aim is to examine how the owners of traditional houses respond to nowadays changes reflected through their houses designs. Brayut tourism village is a traditional settlement located at Yogyakarta’s downtown area which is well known for its unique and well-preserved traditional Javanese houses. The transformation of traditional houses in Brayut is a combination of the need for change and persistence. On the one side, strong local traditions play a role in maintaining the elements of traditional houses and on the other side, dynamic modern needs play a role as a trigger for change. Adaptive space in the traditional house is a solution to this problem. The method used in this research is a case study on some Javanese traditional houses. An in-depth interview with the owners and mapping are also used to examine the chronology of traditional houses transformation. Transformation aspects are defined on the affected physical architecture elements. The result of this study is the transformation occurs on function and meaning of space as an adaptive response from the owners. While the shape of space and buildings, generally preserved as an effort to maintain the bond of traditions and trust.

The sustainable reuse of the built heritage is one of the main challenges of our time. Religious heritage, in particular, requires strong survey strategies and analyses in order to achieve consistent approaches for the conservation and transmission of its value, both material and immaterial. The exploitation of the latter is underpinned by knowledge analyses, prior to the conservation actions, with a focus not only on the techniques of material restoration but also on the values that it represents for the territory and local communities. With this aim, three case studies in Southern Italy are here presented, that offer a good example of how ecclesiastical heritage, although vast and diffuse, is still an undervalued asset. By combining accurate knowledge and historical research in comparison with the residual performance of the buildings, the results aim to demonstrate how integrated knowledge strategies can pursue more conscious choices of new possible uses for abandoned religious heritage, resulting in preserve their memory and add value in terms of social sustainability.

Este artigo apresenta os resultados da Pesquisa intitulada Arquitetura Vernacular de edificações habitacionais como expressão ambiental e cultural no Litoral Sul do Estado da Bahia, Brasil, que objetivou identificar, catalogar e analisar habitações construídas em Comunidades Tradicionais entre os municípios de Itacaré e Una. Partiu-se da hipótese de que o processo construtivo vernacular em Comunidades Tradicionais vem sendo gradativamente substituído por tecnologias construtivas e materiais convencionais, tais como: concreto, argamassa de cimento e tijolos cerâmicos. A Aldeia Indígena Itapoã Tupinambá de Olivença foi escolhida para a coleta das informações. As técnicas de Pesquisa utilizadas foram o registro em diário de campo e um roteiro de entrevista semiestruturada aplicado a um grupo focal, constituído por anciãos da Aldeia, responsável por transmitir o conhecimento acerca do processo construtivo das habitações para a Comunidade. Tanto as descrições em diário de campo quanto as respostas da entrevista foram analisadas considerando: 1 estratégias arquitetônicas bioclimáticas intuitivas utilizadas no processo construtivo das habitações, 2 extração e uso dos Recursos Naturais locais e 3 a relação meio ambiente e Comunidade. Os resultados mostraram que: a) a tipologia vernacular predominante na área de abrangência da Pesquisa e na Aldeia Indígena estudada é o Pau-a-Pique; b) o dimensionamento das habitações, o cálculo dos materiais a serem extraídos da Mata local, rituais para extração dos materiais são definidos e orientados pelo grupo de anciãos da Aldeia, c) o processo coletivo de construção das habitações fortalecem os laços sociais dentro da Comunidade e d) apesar da importância ambiental e cultural do processo vernacular de construção, há materiais convencionais sendo utilizados para substituir as tramas de madeira e argamassa de argila, água, areia e fibras que compõem as paredes das habitações, o que corrobora a hipótese da Pesquisa.
