Sugar-sweetened beverages are widely available and accessible in school environment, and their presence and characteristics of this environment can influence their consumption. This study examines the association of drinking fountains per 100 students, soft drink sales, soft drink advertising, and the presence of street vendors and sugar-sweetened beverages consumption among adolescents in Brazil. This cross-sectional study was carried out using data from the Study of Cardiovascular Risk in Adolescents that was conducted between March 2013 and December 2014. The sample comprised 71,475 adolescents aged 12–17 years from 1,247 public and private schools in Brazilian cities. Sugar-sweetened beverages consumption was the dependent variable. The main effect was the school food environment, which was evaluated based on drinking fountains per 100 students, soft drink sales, soft drink advertising, and the presence of street vendors. Public and private schools that sold soft drinks were associated with higher average sugar-sweetened beverages consumption among adolescents. Our study highlights the importance of creating healthy school food environments by banning sugar-sweetened beverages in schools accordingly.

OBJECTIVE: To describe students protected by laws and exposed to soft drinks sales and assess whether forbidding laws are associated with lower availability of these beverages. METHODS: We identified laws forbidding non-government administered cafeterias or sales of soft drinks in schools in the 27 Brazilian state capitals. Data on soft drinks sales were obtained from Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde do Escolar 2015 (PeNSE – National Survey of School Health 2015), for a representative sample of 9th graders from public and private schools. Students were attributed with the status of their school regarding the law and sale of soft drinks. Co-variables were school status (public or private), school size, geographic regions, mother’s educational level, score of goods and services. We performed multivariate analyses using Poisson regression. RESULTS: The total of 23 laws forbidding sales of soft drinks covered 63.0% of capitals, comprising 56.9% of students. Law coverage was higher among students from more developed regions (67.6%) and in public schools (60.6%), compared with those from less developed regions (38.0%) and private schools (45.8%). Soft drinks were available for 33.9% of students. Students attending public schools in less developed regions had the lowest availability of soft drinks, regardless of law coverage (14.8%; 12.0%); while students attending private schools in these regions had a high availability, regardless of law coverage (82.1%; 73.4%). Restrictive laws were associated with lower sales of soft drinks in more developed regions, and restrictions had a greater association with the availability of soft drinks in public schools (PR = 0.25; 95%CI = 0.15-0.41), compared with private schools (PR = 0.48; 95%CI = 0.35-0.66). CONCLUSION: Laws restricting soft drinks in schools were associated with fewer sales in more developed regions. Private schools were less compliant with the law than public schools. A broadly enforced national law could reduce the availability of soft drinks in schools.

Resumo O estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a comercialização de alimentos em cantinas comerciais localizadas no âmbito escolar de diferentes redes de ensino, tipos de administração e presença ou não de profissional técnico (nutricionista). O estudo do tipo observacional foi realizado em 111 cantinas, sendo 35 estabelecimentos de ensino privado e 76 de ensino público de Curitiba, Paraná, Brasil. Para realizar estas avaliações, foi elaborada uma lista de verificação contendo um conjunto de condutas baseada nas legislações estaduais do Paraná. De acordo com as legislações vigentes, constatou-se que 97,37% das cantinas das instituições públicas e 94,29% das privadas comercializavam alimentos considerados proibidos por apresentarem baixo valor nutricional. Os principais alimentos proibidos comercializados nas cantinas foram os salgadinhos industrializados, os chocolates, as balas e os sucos artificiais. Esses também foram os alimentos e bebidas mais vendidos, segundo os responsáveis. Além disso, 73,87% das cantinas não possuíam supervisão técnica, 89,19% não disponibilizavam dois tipos de frutas e apenas 1,80% tinha mural educativo, conforme exigido pelas legislações vigentes. Conclui-se que as cantinas, independentemente da rede ensino e do tipo de administração, estão em desacordo com as legislações vigentes, tanto na comercialização de alimentos proibidos como na ausência de dois tipos de frutas e na ausência de mural educativo. Os resultados mostraram que a supervisão frequente do responsável técnico se faz necessária para contribuir nas escolhas dos alimentos comercializados e, consequentemente, melhorar a qualidade nutricional dos produtos expostos para venda.
