Combined infrared light and bipolar radiofrequency for skin tightening in asians

Abstract: The combination of broadband infrared light and bipolar radiofrequency produces mild improvement of facial laxity in Asians with no serious adverse sequelae. A high patients' satisfaction is achieved. However, further studies are necessary to demonstrate the long-term effects of the procedure and to optimize treatment parameters.

“…As the temperature rises, the impedance decreases, enabling the target tissues to absorb RF energy more efficiently. Following this synergistic principle, the energy of both RF and optical components can be lowered, which not only reduces pain during the treatment, but also makes it much safer for treating darker skin phototypes [7][8][9]. Three-step electro-optical combination modality can mildly or moderately improve global photoaging.…”

“…25 Visia ® is a multi-spectral imaging system used in study methodologies about aesthetical dermatology because it allows an in-depth analysis of the skin. [26][27][28] With a polarized light technology called RBX ® Technology, useful in the dermatologic investigation of epidermal and dermal alterations, 29 it produces digital images taken with various lamps, one of which is an ultraviolet light lamp. 30 With this lamp, it is possible to visualize spots that are invisible to the naked eye, caused by UV radiation (reactive melanocytic pigmentation), making them clearer; the spots revealed by this lamp are called UV spots.…”

“…In an offface area such as the abdomen, we use an infrared light source with a much larger spot size (Infrared Handpiece from Starlux, Palomar, Burlington, MA). Preliminary data that look at the use of a bipolar radiofrequency with an infrared light source (ReFirme ST device, Syneron Medical Ltd., Yokneam, Israel) and focused ultrasound (Ulthera, LLC, Mesa, AZ) suggest that these methods may be effective for the treatment of skin laxity [10,11]. Further clinical trials are necessary to confirm their effectiveness.…”
