Combined effect of fibers and PTFE nanoparticles on improving the fretting wear resistance of UHMWPE-matrix composites

Abstract: *Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene composites reinforced with carbon fibers (CF) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were prepared. The effects of fillers on the microstructure and fretting wear behavior of composites were investigated. The results of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy measurements indicated that the microstructure of composites were greatly changed, and the distinct interface between fillers and matrix had been formed with the incorporation of CF and PTFE. In addition, r… Show more

“…The enhanced anti-wear performance by g-C 3 N 4 can be attributed to the high load-bearing capacity and mechanical properties [45]. It is generally believed that transfer films are closely related to the anti-wear performance of polymer/steel tribo-systems [46]. Generally, homogeneous transfer and smooth transfer films are good for high wear resistance owing to the prevention of direct contact between frictional surfaces [47,48].…”

“…Filling modification is a simple and effective way to enhance the wear resistance of UHMWPE plate. The fillers used in wear resistance modification include particles and micro‐fibers that usually show higher hardness than UHMWPE (such as cubic BN, 5 Si 3 N 4 , B 4 C, SiC, 6 AlN 7,8 or carbon fiber 9,10 ) or excellent lubrication (such as graphite, MoS 2, 11 polytetrafluoroethylene, 12 or montmorillonite 13 ). The wear resistance strengthening mechanism of UHMWPE filling modification mainly lies in improving the hardness of UHMWPE or easy constructing a continuous transfer film and decreasing the coefficient of friction in the process of friction 14 …”

“…Hence the pressure between components will increase that even lead to seizure. Specifically, fretting will both cause the occlusion or looseness of machine elements and accelerate the initiation and propagation of cracks, thus reducing the useful life of components and affecting the safety of the whole system (Pan et al , 2009; Wang et al , 2016).…”
