Colocalization of neuropeptide Y (NPY)-like and FMRFamide-like immunoreactivities in the brain of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

Abstract: The colocalization of the peptides neuropeptide Y (NPY) and Phe-Met-Arg-Phe-NH2 (FMRFamide) in the brain of the Atlantic salmon was investigated with double immunofluorescence labeling and peroxidase-antiperoxidase immunocytochemical techniques. Colocalization of NPY-like and FMRF amide-like immunoreactivities was observed in neuronal cell bodies and fibers in four brain regions: in the lateral and commissural nuclei of the area ventralis telencephali, in the nucleus ventromedialis thalami, in the laminar nucl… Show more

“…In the mesencephalic tegmentum a group of small ChAT-ir cells, more numerous in Lepisosteus than in Amia , was seen dorsolateral to the oculomotor nucleus. Similarly, in the tegmentum of the rainbow trout, a small cholinergic cell group was described projecting to the optic tectum [Pérez et al, 2000] and corresponding to the laminar nucleus identified in other salmonids [Vecino and Ekström, 1992;Castro et al, 1999]. In other teleosts, such as the goldfish, zebrafish and tench, cholinergic cells were also observed in the rostral tegmental nucleus [Grover and Sharma, 1981;Mueller et al, 2004;Clemente et al, 2005].…”

“…Appetite in fish is driven by a number of factors including neuropeptide Y which is widely distributed in the central nervous system in a variety of fish species, including Atlantic salmon (Vecino and Ekstrom, 1992). Neuropeptide Y plays a critical role in the control of food intake and body mass in salmonids (Aldegunde and Mancebo, 2006;Silverstein et al, 1998), but there are also other factors such as galanin and grhelin (Lin et al, 2000;Volkoff et al, 2005).…”
