Cognitive presence as a unified concept of virtual reality effectiveness

Abstract: 2670 {dnunez, edwin}@cs.uct.ac.za ABSTRACTWe propose a synthesis of two current major approaches to understanding the effectiveness of VR systems. We propose cognitive presence as a single, unified concept of presence which includes previous ideas of presence in a cognitive psychological framework, and propose a methodology for measuring it. We then critically examine the notion of cognitive presence, as a way of conceptualizing HCI quality in virtual environments. 2.

“…Over time, many articles and journals defined presence differently, but all had a similar general meaning. In this research paper, the main definition of presence that will be used is the awareness or state of the mind of being in an environment, either real or virtual (Usoh et al, 1999;Nunez & Blake, 2001). Experiencing a sense of presence can happen whenever a person mentally feels that he or she is present in a situation.…”

“…A virtual reality (VR) environment, however, is suitable for such circumstances. Virtual environments that can generate a high degree of presence are thought to be more effective and better suited to task performance (Slater 1994;Nunez and Blake 2001).…”

“…Because models use quite different theoretical bases, there is often little common ground for comparisons or discussion between authors. Recently, there has been a move towards using cognitive psychology and perception theory as a basis for presence research (see [8] and [9] for examples of this trend). Our work follows this trend by beginning from the concept of cognitive presence [9] which emphasizes the role of perception and the subsequent selection of environmentally appropriate behaviours in virtual environments.…”

Our work follows this trend by beginning from the concept of cognitive presence [9] which emphasizes the role of perception and the subsequent selection of environmentally appropriate behaviours in virtual environments. Following the cognitive presence approach, we consider perceptual processes to be at the heart of presence.…”
