Cognitive functioning in children with internalising, externalising and dysregulation problems: a population-based study

Abstract: Psychiatric symptoms in childhood are closely related to neurocognitive deficits. However, it is unclear whether internalising and externalising symptoms are associated with general or distinct cognitive problems. We examined the relation between different types of psychiatric symptoms and neurocognitive functioning in a population-based sample of 1177 school-aged children. Internalising and externalising behaviour was studied both continuously and categorically. For continuous, variable-centred analyses, broa… Show more

“…This has also been suggested by prospective studies that showed lower academic achievement in children with symptoms of hyperactivity and inattentiveness (Polderman, Boomsma, Bartels, Verhulst, & Huizink, ) and impaired cognitive functioning in individuals with ADHD (Faraone, Ghirardi, Kuja‐Halkola, Lichtenstein, & Larsson, ). In addition, prior research reported that cognitive ability and behavioural scores are highly intertwined (Blanken et al., ) and suggest that the association between educational attainment polygenic scores and lower externalizing problems could result from better cognitive abilities in these children.…”

“…A recent special issue focused on associations between externalizing and EF (Sulik, 2017) emphasizes through a number of longitudinal studies that strong EF ability buffers against later externalizing behaviors in vulnerable children. Similar studies that have examined cognition beyond EF are relatively sparse, though a recent population-based study of over 1100 children from the Generation R cohort (Blanken et al, 2017) reported associations between mother-reported CBCL scores and cognition as measured by the NEPSY-II, administered over one year later. Externalizing was significantly associated with poor attention/executive function as well as with poor sensorimotor function.…”

“…The school years are characterized by cognitive skills and self-regulation strategies refinement while, in some children, clinical symptoms emerge. A disruption in one area of development may be accompanied by impairment in other areas [3].…”
