Coccolith size rules – What controls the size of coccoliths during coccolithogenesis?

Abstract: Coccoliths are calcite platelets produced inside coccolithophore cells and extruded to form a covering on the cell surface called a coccosphere. The size of coccoliths is an important parameter often used to identify species, and observations on extant species have shown an influence of abiotic parameters (e.g., CO 2 , light, nutrient concentration) on coccolith size. However, the sometimes large range of coccolith sizes occurring within a single coccosphere questions the mechanisms controlling coccolith size.… Show more

“…It is already generally accepted that coccolith size is a good proxy for cell diameter and volume (and thus inorganic carbon quota, cellular resource uptake rates, etc.) in many placolith-bearing taxa [122][123][124][125] and that the degree of calcification of a cell can also be reconstructed from individual coccoliths [83,[126][127][128][129].…”

“…Thus, a small change in N C may induce a large variance in PIC of Geoc. Alternatively, a cell is actually surrounded by the coccoliths in a variety of size or mass (Beuvier et al., 2019), and average M C may be biased by the single measurement, since different sized coccoliths can be produced during the life span of a cell (Suchéras‐Marx et al., 2022).…”

“…New coccoliths are produced at least every ca. 60 minutes (Paasche, 2002;Suchéras-Marx et al, 2022) and cells must produce ca. 6-10 new coccoliths between each cell division to ensure a complete cell covering for two daughter cells (based on mean CN 18-20 in our samples).…”

“…(1) that AE response must precede a CL response, (2) that the size change of CL and AE must be positively correlated over some reasonable timeframe(Suchéras-Marx et al, 2022), i.e., cell size does not increase whilst coccolith size decreases or vice versa, (3) that the relative magnitude of the cell size change and the corresponding coccolith size change are reasonably proportional (i.e., a small cell size change does not drive a disproportionally large change in coccolith size), and (4) that a change in AE due to onehttps://doi.org/10.5194/egusphere-2024-349 Preprint.
