CO2‐Responsive Polymers

Abstract: This Review focuses on the recent progress in the area of CO2‐responsive polymers and provides detailed descriptions of these existing examples. CO2‐responsive polymers can be categorized into three types based on their CO2‐responsive groups: amidine, amine, and carboxyl groups. Compared with traditional temperature, pH, or light stimuli‐responsive polymers, CO2‐responsive polymers provide the advantage to use CO2 as a “green” trigger as well as to capture CO2 directly from air. In addition, the current challe… Show more

“…[7] Amidine, atype of CO 2 -responsive molecule,c an react with CO 2 in water to form ac harged amidinium bicarbonate and this reaction is reversible by bubbling with Ar or N 2 .Aseries of CO 2 controlled on-off switches based on amidine functionality have been developed by Jessops group including solvents, solutes and surfactants. [8] Our group have previously constructed the "breathing" vesicles in aqueous solution with reversible distinctive volume expansion and contraction in size by alternating treatment with CO 2 and Ar,r espectively.…”

The primary structure of the poly(amino acid)s controls folding into 3D protein structures that have a wide range of adaptive functions ranging from, e.g., catalysis (enzymes) to switching of permeation (ion channels).…”

“…The fixation of CO 2 by the addition of CO 2 to a polymer having carbine in the imidazole ring can be assumed to form the polyzwitterion state, and the related polymers are summarized in Figure 11 [106]. Fixation via carbine on the polymer in the structure of poly(70) was performed within 60 min at 40˝C in a CO 2 environment and the release was performed at an elevated temperature of 140˝C in a nitrogen atmosphere [107].…”
