Apparent thermodynamic parameters for the hydroxy proton ionisation of Bordeaux‐R were obtained in micellar solutions using the thermochromic method. The effect of addition of the surfactants CTAB, TX‐100 and SDS was investigated in buffered solutions in the pH range of 6–13. Ionisation constants in water and in the presence of surfactants were determined spectrophotometrically and the pK′ of Bordeaux‐R in water was found to be 10.90 in the absence of surfactant. However, at concentrations above critical micelle concentration, pK′ dropped to 10.14 with CTAB, increased to 11.29 with TX‐100 but was insensitive to SDS addition. Standard enthalpies and entropies of ionisation were obtained using the thermochromic method. This method, in conjunction with pK and spectral measurements and comparison with different azo dyes, has been shown to provide detailed information on the mechanism of dye–surfactant interaction.

Solid state mixing", such as mechanical milling (MM), represents an ecological and economical alternative to achieve homogeneous dispersion of nano-fillers into biodegradable polymers. The advantage of working at low temperatures, without a solvent and with almost any type of polymer matrix, opens new and unexplored routes for the preparation of advanced functional materials. The use of mechanical milling contains within itself several advantages, including a strong reduction of environmental disposal, the control of the degradation processes associated with high temperature, the compatibilization of immiscible blends and the treatment of waste disposal and recycled materials. The simultaneous formation and dispersion of nanoparticles, the promotion of mechano-chemical reactions and the proper manipulation of thermo-sensitive active molecules such as antimicrobials, oxygen scavengers and antibiotics are other advantages of this process. The aim of the current work is to review the recent literature on the use of MM as a green technique to produce bio-nanocomposites. A series of 5-(pyridin-4-yl)-N-substituted-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-amines (3a-d), 5-(pyridin-4-yl)-N-substituted-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amines (4a-d) and 5-(pyridin-4-yl)-4-substituted-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiones (5a-d) were obtained by the cyclization of hydrazinecarbothioamide derivatives 2a-d derived from isonicotinic acid hydrazide. Aminoalkylation of compounds 5a-d with formaldehyde and various secondary amines furnished the Mannich bases 6a-p. The structures of the newly synthesized compounds were confirmed on the basis of their spectral data and elemental analyses. All the compounds were screened for their in vitro anticancer activity against six human cancer cell lines and normal fibroblast cells. Sixteen of the tested compounds exhibited significant cytotoxicity against most cell lines. Among these derivatives, the Mannich bases 6j, 6m and 6p were found to exhibit the most potent activity. The Mannich base 6m showed more potent cytotoxic activity against gastric cancer NUGC (IC50=0.021 µM) than the standard CHS 828 (IC50=0.025 µM). Normal fibroblast cells WI38 were affected to a much lesser extent (IC50>10 µM).
