Clonal spread of carbapenem-resistant OXA-23-positive Acinetobacter baumannii in a Bulgarian university hospital

Abstract: From October 1999 to September 2006, 29 carbapenem-resistant isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii were collected consecutively from patients hospitalized in different wards of the University Hospital in Pleven, Bulgaria. The bla(OXA-23) gene, associated with the upstream-located ISAba1, was identified as the mechanism responsible for carbapenem resistance in all isolates. The isolates belonged to two different clonal groups, indicating a sustained hospital outbreak. This study demonstrates both the epidemic pot… Show more

“…This was an expected result in view of that other Bulgarian authors published similar data concerning different University hospitals in the country. [18][19][20] Stoeva et al organized the fi rst detailed study in our country on multi-drug resistant A. baumannii proving the wide spread of OXA-23 among them. OXA-58 and OXA-24 are not that signifi cant for Bulgaria as well as the hyperexpression of the intrinsic OXA-51 due to the upstream situated ISAba1.…”

“…The bla OXA-23 gene, increasingly reported worldwide (Kohlenberg et al, 2009;Mugnier et al, 2010;Stoeva et al, 2008;Wang et al, 2007;Zhou et al, 2007), was the most prevalent (97/98, 99.0 %) acquired carbapenemase gene among 98 imipenem-resistant A. baumannii isolates, which is different from the result of a recent study showing that the bla OXA-58-like gene was epidemic in several Italian ICUs (Donnarumma et al, 2010). In addition, the presence of the ISAba1 element and its association with bla OXA-23 was identified among all the bla OXA-23 -positive isolates.…”

“…Interestingly, nosocomial outbreaks with Acinetobacter strains producing these enzymes have been reported from various region in the world (Stoeva et al, 2008). Present study recorded the first two blaOXA-23 harbored carbapenem resistant A. baumannii clinical isolates in Najaf hospital (Fig.…”
