Clinimetric Properties of the Brief Fatigue Inventory Applied to Oncological Patients Hospitalized for Chemotherapy

Abstract: Background. The clinimetric properties of the Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) were not previously assessed in oncological patients hospitalized for chemotherapy.Objective. To assess the reliability and validity of the construct, ceiling and floor effects, and responsiveness of the BFI administered to oncological patients hospitalized for chemotherapy.Methods. This test-retest study included 100 oncological patients hospitalized for chemotherapy. The clinimetric properties tested were as follows: internal consist… Show more

“…The criterion validity was strong, measured through its correlation with the PFS (PFS; r = 0.84, P < 0.05). The BFI showed a strong internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.94) and substantial test–retest (ICC [95% CI] = 0.87 [0.81–0.91]) 41 . To assess its construct validity, Mendonza et al .…”

“…The assessments of muscle strength, physical performance and fatigue, and nutritional status were carried out by the same physical therapist and a nutritionist, respectively, during the preoperative hospital stay. The Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) was used to classify the level of fatigue, which was considered mild from 1 to 3, moderate from 4 to 6, and severe from 7 to 10 15,16 . For the muscle strength test, the handgrip test was performed, obtained through manual dynamometry in kilograms (kg), using a manual hydraulic dynamometer brand Saehan ® .…”

“…BFI is used to rapidly assess the severity and impact of CRF on daily functioning over a 24-h period. It has adequate reliability, validity, and internal responsiveness when used to assess CRF in patients hospitalized for chemotherapy ( 23 ). The degree and impact of CRF is scored using a scale from 1 to 10 (1 indicating the absence of fatigue and 10 indicating maximum fatigue).…”
