Clinicopathologic Features and Outcome Predictors of Leptospira Interrogans Australis Serogroup Infection in Dogs: A Retrospective Study of 20 Cases (2001–2004)

Abstract: Among the evaluated clinicopathologic biomarkers, serum albumin, cardiac troponin I, CRP/Hpt, urinary albumin, and urinary total protein to creatinine ratio were found to predict outcome and warrant evaluation in larger prospective studies.

“…The reason for higher concentrations of SAA in septic dogs may be related to inflammatory reactions and tissue damage. Similary, several studies have reported that CRP and SAA could be useful markers for diagnosis and prognosis in various disease [10,16,17,34,35] . However, CRP and SAA do not seem to be very spesific markers for the detection of bacterial infections because it might increase in a variety of diseases, not particularly in bacterial infections [10,16,17,35] .…”

“…In addition, increased CRP and SAA concentrations have been detected in dogs with systemic inflammation [10,16,17,30] . Furthermore, CRP and SAA were shown to be significantly increased in dogs with parvovirus enteritis [33] , ehrlichiosis [23] and leptospirosis [34] . C-reactive protein and SAA concentrations have been shown to be dramatically elevated in dogs with pyometra [18] .…”

“…Secondary hemostasis was evaluated by the assessment of PT and APTT. Endogenous antithrombotic activity was evaluated by measuring antithrombin III activity and by determining the concentration of TAT complexes; parameters used to define DIC in both humans and dogs (Moore and Williams, 1979;Furlanello et al, 2005;Máthé et al, 2006;Mastrorilli et al, 2007). It has been hypothesised that during the initial stages of DIC the patients are thought to be hypercoagulable as a result of circulating inflammatory mediators that activate haemostasis.…”

“…Interestingly, severe parvovirus enteritis in dogs in the same study showed an elevated CRP concentration (> 180 mg/L) which was not accompanied by elevated Hp values (>4 g/L) , thus suggesting that along with severe sepsis, there could be a complication due to gastrointestinal haemorrhage Figure 2. Approach to C-reactive protein and haptoglobin concentrations in infectious diseases in dogs [17,18,22,23,27,40,41,50] or haemolysis present in all severe cases [18]. Diminished plasma concentrations of Hp were reported in patients with various haemolytic diseases [19] and haemorrahage or haemolysis associated with haemolytic anaemia [20] as Hp has been identifi ed as the principal scavenger of free haemoglobin in the blood [21].…”

“…After intraperitoneal inoculation of Leptospira interrogans serovar canicola in beagles, CRP concentration peaked between 2 to 4 days coinciding with a brief or mild pyrexia and increased alkaline phosphatase concentrations [26]. C-reactive protein and haptoglobin levels were increased in dogs with symptomatic leptospirosis [27].…”
