Clinical spectrum and surgical approach of adult intussusceptions: a multicentric study

Abstract: Intussusception rarely occurs in adults, but nearly half of their causes are malignant. The CT scan is a helpful examination for enteric intussusceptions whether barium enema seems to be the most performing method for colonic lesions. Surgery is the recommended treatment, with or without a primary reduction of the intussusception. During the surgical procedure, this reduction can lead to a more limited bowel resection.

“…The great percentage of adult intussusception are of the enteric, colocolic, ileocecal, and ileocolic type [2,19,20]. Intussusception occurs more frequently in the small (50-88%) than in the large bowel (12-50%) [1,2,4,6,7,14]. In our series, the proportion for location of intussusception was similar to the previous studies, and the most common type was enteric intussusceptions (52.4%).…”

“…Adult intussusceptions are detected by plain abdominal film, barium studies, abdominal sonography, abdominal computerized tomography (CT), angiography, radionucleotide studies, and magnetic resonance imaging [2,4,9,12,13,19]. Although judgment to choose diagnostic imaging techniques varies, abdominal CT scan provides the best accurate diagnostic rate for intestinal intussusceptions [6,8,9,[11][12][13].…”
