Clinical evaluation of the Topcon CT10 tonometer

Abstract: We evaluated the clinical use of the Topcon CT10 non-contact tonometer in our outpatient clinic. Compared to the Goldmann applanation it is useful and reliable in screening glaucoma patients.

“…An accurate IOP measurement is fundamental in the ophthalmic examination. Most studies have reported that NCT models have tendency to overestimate IOP at low pressures and underestimate IOP at high pressures when the IOP readings are compared with GAT, while a study has reported that the NCT underestimated IOP at the lower ranges and overestimated at the higher IOP ranges and gives good correlation in the normal IOP range …”

“…Verdoorn et al compared Topcon CT‐10 NCT with GAT in 221 eyes in normal and glaucoma subjects (IOP GAT range, 4–34 mmHg) and found mean of IOP difference to be 2.24 ± 2.15 mmHg. They reported that when compared to other NCT, this tonometer measures IOP when amount of light reflected from corneal vertex is at its maximum.…”

“…However, it causes dis comfort in anxious patients, and is a potential source of oc ular infection. Non-contact tonometry flattens the corneal centre by means of air f 1], avoids some of the disadvantages o f contact tonometry, is easier to use for the screening of large populations and can be performed by non medical staff [2], However, its accuracy is controversial. Some au thors recommend its use [3], while others do not consider it as a useful technique [4].…”

“…In addition the use of these instruments is simple and can rapidly be learned. Various studies comparing different types of non-contact tonometers with the Goldmann applanation tonometer have already been published [2][3][4][5]. We compared the Topcon CT-20 and the Reichert Xpert non-contact tonometers with the Goldmann applanation tonometer.…”
