Clinical Echinococcosis

Abstract: In 221 patients (0.48% of hospital admissions) with hydatid disease (122 female and 99 males), 81% had single and 19% multiple organs involved. Lungs, liver and spleen as single sites of echinococcosis together represented 83.24% of cases and the liver alone represented 95.24% of instances with multiple organ involvement. One hundred seventy-nine single and 74 multiple cysts (ratio of 2.42/1) represented a total of 363 cysts (1.64 cysts/patient). The incidence of intact cysts was 51.52% and 48.48% had ruptured… Show more

“…is often manifested by a slowly growing cystic mass, most often involving the liver and the lungs (78%) [1]. The 22% of cases that do not involve the liver on lung affect muscle, peritoneum, bone, spleen, pancreas, heart, kidney, or brain instead [1 , 2].…”

“…Other serologic tests, such as the complement fixation test, have been used with variable accuracy. [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] Diagnostic X-ray evaluations are not accurate because the pictures are not characteristic, and interpretation varies among radiologists. Other investigations, like isotope scanning and ultrasonography, in suspected cases of echinococcosis may improve the diagnostic accuracy and give a good idea about the number, size, and location of the cysts.…”

“…The residual cavity should be filled with 20% hypertonic saline after suction of the parasitic fluid and left for five to ten minutes to lower the incidence of secondary echinococcosis. 1,13,[17][18][19][20] Despite all measures taken, the recurrence rate is 3% to 11%, 9 and the latent period is between two and three years. Radiotherapy is not advisable.…”

“…Complication associated rather than disease itself, are difficult to treat. 2 Although hydatid cysts can be treated by various modalities, like surgery, chemotherapy, and or percutaneous aspiration, but surgery by far remains the gold standard for treatment among day by day evolving new procedures. It is the only treatment which is applicable over the entire spectrum of disease.…”
