Clinical and Radiological Outcome of the Newest Generation of Ceramic-on-Ceramic Hip Arthroplasty in Young Patients

Abstract: Ceramic-on-ceramic articulations have become an attractive option for total hip arthroplasty in young patients. In this study, we retrospectively evaluated the short- to midterm clinical and radiographic results in 51 consecutive patients (61 hips) using the newest generation of ceramic implants. Results obtained in our study showed positive clinical and radiological outcomes. Both HHS and UCLA activity scores doubled after surgery and tended to increase over time. There was one infection requiring a two-stage… Show more

“…This improvement was statistically significant (p< 0.005). Our results are comparable to a study done by Reuven et al [10] in which pre and post-op Harris Hip scores were 45 and 88 respectively with 80% patients having good or excellent results. Another study was done by Millar et al [13] in which pre and post operative Harris hip scores were 29.4 and 85.7 respectively at minimum of 24 months of follow up.…”

“…In our study out of 30 hips, 5 were that of females with male: female ratio of 5:1. A study conducted by Reuven et al [10] included 10 males and 40 females. No significant statistical differences were seen comparing pre and post-operative Harris hip scores.…”

“…Ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) articulations exhibit by far the lowest wear rates and are considered a viable option for young, active patients. Excellent mid-term clinical outcomes are reported for modern CoC hip replacements using zirconiatoughened alumina (Biolox delta), and component fractures are extremely rare [35,36]. One well-recognized and annoying complication of ceramic-on-ceramic THA is squeaking-a high pitched, audible sound that occurs during movement, often related to a specific activity [37,38].…”
