Clinical and radiographical evaluation of mineral trioxide aggregate, biodentine and propolis as pulpotomy medicaments in primary teeth

Abstract: ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), Biodentine and Propolis as pulpotomy medicaments in primary dentition, both clinically and radiographically.Materials and MethodsA total of 75 healthy 3 to 10 yr old children each having at least one carious primary molar tooth were selected. Random assignment of the pulpotomy medicaments was done as follows: Group I, MTA; Group II, Biodentine; Group III, Propolis. All the pulpotomized teeth were evaluated at … Show more

“…33 Some studies have used 33% Korean green propolis extract for pulpotomy, and at 6 months, propolis showed comparable clinical and radiographic success rate to that of formocresol in primary dentition. 34 Kusum et al 35 showed similar results in spite of a significant decrease in success rate of Indian propolis at 9 months. Although the composition of propolis varies according to the source 36 and the effects on dental pulp cells may also differ accordingly, studies have provided evidence that suggest the potential application of Brazilian propolis in pulpotomy.…”

“…A new bioactive material with dentin-like mechanical properties, BD has been used in primary molar pulpotomies due to its high biocompatibility and bioactivity, excellent sealing ability, short setting time, and ease of handling [ 29 , 30 , 45 – 47 ]. The 100% success rate of BD after 6 months in the present study concurs with the results of many other studies [ 29 , 30 , 45 , 48 ].…”

“…This result coincides with Collado-Gonzalez et al [20] they reported that biodentine exhibited better cytocompatibility and bioactivity on stem cells from human exfoliated primary teeth, this has prompted its use for pulpotomy of primary teeth. The role of SSC restoration over pulpotomized teeth is to protect the underlying pulp against microleakage [21] . Croll and Killian have recommended SSCs for final restoration of treated molars based on the assumption that there is less leakage in crowned teeth than those restored with amalgam.…”
