The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Brazilian propolis on the cell viability, mineralization, anti-inflammatory ability, and migration of human dental pulp cells (hDPCs). The cell viability was evaluated with CCK-8 kit after 1, 5, 7, and 9 days. The deposition of calcified matrix and the expression of osteogenesis-related genes were evaluated by Alizarin Red staining and real-time PCR after incubation in osteogenic medium for 21 days. The expression of inflammation-related genes in cells was determined after exposure to 1 μg/mL LPS for 3 h. Finally, the numbers of cells that migrated through the permeable membranes were compared during 15 h. Propolis and MTA significantly increased the viability of hDPCscompared to the control group on days 7 and 9. In the propolis group, significant enhancement of osteogenic potential and suppressed expression of IL-1β and IL-6 was observed after LPS exposure compared to the MTA and control groups. The number of migration cells in the propolis group was similar to that of the control group, while MTA significantly promoted cell migration. Propolis showed comparable cell viability to that of MTA and exhibited significantly higher anti-inflammatory and mineralization promotion effects on hDPCs.

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare, both clinically and radiographically, the effects of calcium silicate-based materials (i.e., ProRoot MTA [PR-MTA], MTA-Plus [MTA-P], and Biodentine [BD]) and ferric sulfate [FS] in pulpotomy of primary molars. Materials and Methods In this randomized clinical trial, 29 healthy 5- to 7-year-old children with at least four carious primary molars with no clinical or radiographic evidence of pulp degeneration were enrolled. The pulpotomy agents were assigned as follows: Group 1: BD; Group 2: MTA-P; Group 3: PR-MTA; and Group 4: FS. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were performed at 6, 12, and 24 months. Data were analyzed using chi-square tests. Results Total success rates at 24 months were 82.75%, 86.2%, 93.1%, and 75.86%, respectively. No statistically significant differences in total success rates were observed among the groups at 6-, 12-, and 24-month follow-ups. When the groups were compared according to follow-up times, the success rates in each group did not vary significantly among the 6–12-month, 6–24-month, or 12–24-month periods (p > 0.05). Conclusion Although the success rates of BD, MTA-P, MTA-PR, and FS did not differ significantly, calcium silicate-based materials appeared to be more appropriate than FS in clinical practice.

Aim:The present study was conducted to compare effects of biodentine and formocresol as pulp-dressing agents clinically, radiographically and histopatholically in primary teeth. Materials and Methods:Thirty healthy children aged from four to eight years, they were selected from patients attending outpatient clinic of Pediatric Dentistry Department. Each child had at least bilateral deep carious lower primary molar indicated for pulpotomy. Pulpotomy was done in both groups; where group I treated by biodentine while formocresol used in group II. The study cases were recalled after three, six, nine and twelve months for clinical and radiographic evaluation. For histopathological study sixteen lower primary first molars planned for serial extraction were selected, biodentine and formocresol pulpotomies were done, extraction of the treated teeth from each group was done after one and three-month intervals.Results: the overall clinical success rate of biodentine group was 90%, while formocresol group was 80%. The two groups were clinically successful with no statistically significant difference between them (P= 0.278). The radiographic success rate of biodentine group was 86.6%, while for formocresol group was 73.3%. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (P = 0.197). Biodentine showed significantly better histopathological results compared to formacresol after three-month interval. Biodentine favored the formation of partial dentine bridge with normal pulpal architecture. The pulp tissue in formocresol group showed necrosis with no evidence of dentine bridge formation Conclusion: the biodentine showed higher clinical, radiographic and histopathologic success rate compared to formocresol as a pulpotomy agent in primary molars. It can be considered as a biomaterial for vital pulp therapy of deep caries in primary teeth.
