Climate Change and Its Impacts on Oases Ecosystem in Morocco

Abstract: Today, the international community agrees that climate change is one of the most important threats to the equilibrium of ecosystems. For its part, Morocco is not immune to this phenomenon because of climatic disturbances that the country has known for several years. Moroccan oases are among the most affected ecosystems by climate change, which has resulted in reduced yields of agricultural production, poverty, and deterioration of natural resources. The reports showed that in Morocco the area of palm groves ha… Show more

“…Currently, drought is one of the most frequent and severe abiotic stresses negatively affecting many physiological and biochemical parameters, plant growth, and development in arid and semi-arid Mediterranean ecosystems [1,2]. In addition, these ecosystems are subject to particular climatic conditions and anthropogenic pressure, leading to a decline in forest cover and irreversibly to serious environmental consequences such as rapid soil erosion and desertification [3]. Drought in these regions is becoming extreme, longer, and more frequent.…”

“…The assessment of climate change impacts in Morocco has been widely reported in the past [55,56]. Most studies in the field of climate change have only focused on CMIP3 [57] and CMIP5 scenarios [58].…”

“…The human and nature are dynamically intertwined and embedded in the oasis, placing vulnerability, shocks and extreme events as part of this dynamic (Ben Salim, 2014;Ait El Mokhtar et al, 2019). In other terms, the resilience and hence sustainability of oasis agriculture and ecosystems at large are questioned due to major negative environmental and socioeconomic impacts (Ait El Mokhtar et al, 2019).…”
