Cleaning Methods for Ceramic Ultrafiltration Membranes Affected by Organic Fouling

Abstract: The use of ceramic membranes in the treatment and processing of various liquids, including those of organic origin, has increased tremendously at the industrial level. Apart from the selection of the most appropriate membrane materials and operational conditions, suitable membrane cleaning procedures are a must to minimize fouling and increase membrane lifespan. The review summarizes currently available and practiced non-reagent and cleaning-in-place methods for ceramic membranes that are used in the treatment… Show more

“…Thus, various methods have been used to reduce the membrane fouling by eliminating its promoting factors [ 7 ]. This includes pre-treatment of the feed with a disinfectant, backwash cleaning of the membrane, and optimization of the system operating conditions [ 11 ]. Other antifouling practices include modification of the membrane surface during its fabrication to endow the membrane with an intrinsic resistance to fouling.…”

“…Physical methods are reagent-free methods of membrane cleaning, and include Hydraulic flushing, backwashing, backpulsing, air enhanced backflushing, use of ultrasound, use of electric field and others. Chemical cleaning of membranes is a so-called cleaning-in-place (CIP) using the following typical reagents: alkalis, oxidants/disinfectants, acids, chelating agents, surfactants and enzymes (Gruskevica & Mezule, 2021).…”

“…Four modules, notably the plate and frame, spiral wound, hollow fiber and the tubular type [ 71 , 72 , 73 ], are known in the membrane industry. However, two modules are applicable in the DMP system as there is the requirement of separate solutions flowing on either side of the membrane for counter exchange of the ions.…”
