Background Existing positive shape models are based on values for the right side of the body. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comparative study to analyze both left- and right-side data to explore asymmetrical body characteristics, considering that most older people are not able to maintain a healthy spinal vertical tilt presentation. In this study, 3D scanning and 3D measurement were used to analyze and study the asymmetry of the elderly in South Korea to provide more complete basic size data for the development of clothing patterns for the elderly.Methods The calculated values were analyzed by ANOVA and correlation analysis, and the paired sample t-test was performed to find asymmetrical characteristics of the older adult body. Finally, we used the independent t-test to analyze sex differences. Geomagic Design X software was used to record the coordinates of the measured points to reconstruct 3D models of the older adult body. We present a new method based on analysis of the vertex-anterior neck plane, the anterior neck-omphalion plane, and the omphalion-crotch point plane as benchmarks for the center of the head, the upper torso and the lower torso, respectively, to determine lateral asymmetry.Results The Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test indicated the tendency of the torso to tilt to the right in older men and women. Compared with the inclination of the head, the inclination of the lower torso is more obvious. The correlation analysis results show that the tilt of the head does not affect the asymmetrical characteristics of the trunk.Conclusions This study did not use the traditional median sagittal plane as a central datum plane, instead separating the model according to the structure of the human body into the head, upper body, and lower body, with three independent central datum planes. Therefore, this study contributes an analysis of human asymmetry, thus providing more complete basic size data for the development of clothing patterns for the elderly in South Korea.

: This study analyzes the wearing and purchasing conditions of outdoor jackets by senior men who are over 50s, and examines product sizes of outdoor jackets in the market. A total of 134 questionnaires and sizing systems (or product size) of 10 outdoor brands were used as analytical data. The results were: a high number of senior men enjoyed hiking as an outdoor activity, with most of them following this activity1-3 times per month and as a preferred personal activity for over 5 years. Most needed outdoor wear suitable for these daily life activities. Outdoor wear satisfaction tends to decrease as people age. The major reason for the dissatisfaction with outdoor wear was price. Senior men aged 50s and 60s emphasize design and color when purchasing outdoor wear; however, men in their 70s considered price a priority. Senior men preferred outdoor brands based on a comfortable fit. An investigation on 10 outdoor brands indicated that they had not designated a specific target customer. A comparison of the product size of outdoor jackets with a similar silhouette indicated some deviations among sizes; however, the age of customers was not considered. The human body tends to shrink in stature and increase in girth as a person ages; consequently, we need to reflect body shape changes and senior's size in outdoor wear.

The taxonomy of foot shapes or other parts of the body is important, especially for design purposes. We propose a methodology based on archetypoid analysis (ADA) that overcomes the weaknesses of previous methodologies used to establish typologies. ADA is an objective, data-driven methodology that seeks extreme patterns, the archetypal profiles in the data. ADA also explains the data as percentages of the archetypal patterns, which makes this technique understandable and accessible even for non-experts. Clustering techniques are usually considered for establishing taxonomies, but we will show that finding the purest or most extreme patterns is more appropriate than using the central points returned by clustering techniques. We apply the methodology to an anthropometric database of 775 3D right foot scans representing the Spanish adult female and male population for footwear design. Each foot is described by a 5626 × 3 configuration matrix of landmarks. No multivariate features are used for establishing the taxonomy, but all the information gathered from the 3D scanning is employed. We use ADA for shapes described by landmarks. Women's and men's feet are analyzed separately. We have analyzed 3 archetypal feet for both men and women. These archetypal feet could not have been recovered using multivariate techniques.
