Classification of artificial (man-made) ground

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The legacy inherited from anthropogenic processes needs to be addressed in order to provide reliable and up-to-date ground information relevant to the urban environment. The legacy includes holes as well as materials. Their characteristics derive from former quarrying and mining activities, industrial processes creating derelict ground, variably consolidated made ground, and contaminated groundwater and soils. All need to be systematically assessed to inform the planning process and provide the basis … Show more

“…This study also highlights the presence of contaminants, including asbestos and oil. This information, and the extent of the landfill sites, could be of great value to developers of brownfield sites in identifying potential contaminated land, which could support development strategies and mitigation (Rosenbaum et al, 2003). However, one important omission in these site records is the lack of information on whether the sites had been lined with an impermeable barrier prior to the emplacement of waste material.…”

“…Many datasets, including geological and cartographic agency map and spatial data, typically under represent the distribution of artificial ground and currently offer scant detail describing the composition of fill material, although there are schemes and protocols that could be adopted to improve this situation (Rosenbaum et al, 2003). These include detailed descriptions conforming to recognised standards such as British Standards (anon, 1999) in site investigation boreholes; through to more anecdotal descriptions of bulk character of landfill material, such as country-wide assessments of pre-1974 waste disposal sites carried out by the Department for the Environment in 1973 (www.bgs.ac.uk/geoindex).…”

“…50 years ago with the 'Great Acceleration' of the second half of the twentieth century [13,14]? In 2007, when for the first time more than half of the world's population lives in urban areas-creating a world-wide "urban strata" [15]?…”

“…The nomenclature connected with interdisciplinary studies of archaeological sites needs to be clarified and precisely defined -this especially concerns the terminology used by archaeologists in such interdisciplinary studies (Rosenbaum et al, 2003). In historical urban soils, the thickness and vertical profile of layers can indicate the nature and degree of human pressure.…”
