Classic Grounded Theory—The Latest Version: Interpretation of Classic Grounded Theory as a Meta‐Theory for Research

Abstract: In this paper, I critically and analytically describe the book Classic Grounded Theory: Applications with Qualitative and Quantitative Data (Holton and Walsh 2017). I also offer reflections on the development of grounded theory methodology, and on the (in)consistencies of its procedures and epistemological assumptions. Finally, I offer some possibilities for developing classic grounded theory based on the proposals included in the book.

“…Selective coding was conducted in the last part of the coding processes by using the output from the axial coding. In this phase, the results of axial coding were organized under concepts that comprehensively answered the research questions and helped to explain important aspects of the phenomena (Konecki, 2018). In other words, all categories were integrated around the core category and the category that requires explication were filled with descriptive details (Corbin and Strauss, 1998).…”

“…Primary data are obtained through in‐depth personal interviews. Grounded theory focuses on searching for the original proposal (Konecki, 2018) which embodies research on specific public phenomena using primary information (Chapman et al., 2020). The case study method is appropriate for grounded theory, as scholars can gather information and obtain evidence from primary parameters, thereby formulating theory from practice (Barratt et al., 2011).…”

“…Judith A. Holton observes that classic grounded theory (cGT) is a fundamentally distinct methodology and does not fit within the established qualitative or quantitative research procedures (Holton, 2007). Krzysztof T. Konecki has offered some possibilities for developing cGT consistent with Glaser's approach (Konecki, 2018).…”
