Circulating microRNAs as biomarkers for Sepsis secondary to pneumonia diagnosed via Sepsis 3.0

Abstract: Background Sepsis biomarkers have limited specificity and sensitivity. Few studies have investigated microRNA (miRNA) biomarkers for sepsis secondary to pneumonia. This study aims to investigate the diagnostic and prognostic values of miRNAs in sepsis secondary to pneumonia. Methods Sepsis 3.0 was used to diagnose sepsis. Screening was performed through the Agilent miRNA chip technology by using the following criteria: p < 0.05, fold ≥2 or < 0… Show more

“…The sharp indicate significant differences highlighted between all groups using the Kruskal-Wallis test: # p < 0.05 that cause similarities and differences, which influence the patient's situation itself and make sepsis so very complicated (Stearns-Kurosawa et al 2011). This is why the association of miRNAs with sepsis diagnosis remains controversial (Zhang et al 2019b).…”

“…Wu et al [ 22 ] showed miRNA-223 expression was positively correlated with APACHE II score as well. Of note, Wang et al [ 6 ] suggested that miR-223 in serum was downregulated among sepsis patients, while other five studies demonstrated miR-223 in the plasm was upregulated [ 14 – 16 , 22 , 26 ]. In fact, the conflicting results of miR-223 were also reported in hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma [ 39 ].…”

“…One of the main obstacles to establish a well-de ned link between miRNAs and sepsis lies in the fact that sepsis can be caused by very different factors that cause similarities and differences, which in uence the patient's situation itself and make sepsis so very complicated [38]. This is why the association of miRNAs with sepsis diagnosis remains controversial [39]. miRNAs from different biological uids can be used for the early prediction and evaluation of neonatal sepsis, where various miRNAs are down-regulated, and contribute to the initiation of the immune response to infection [40].…”
